  • The release of the first Complete Webern Edition forms part of the series of releases celebrating Pierre Boulez's 75th birthday year, because its core is formed by the conductor-composer's recordings with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Ensemble InterContemporain of Webern's orchestral and vocal works. In this way Deutsche Grammophon pays tribute to a considerable feat on the part of the maestro. As a conductor he has moved the masterpieces of modern music into the musical mainstream..

  • The Edition includes some new recordings. In the Fourth Volume, the 3 Lieder on poems by Ferdinand Avenarius are sung by Christiane Oelze accompanied by Eric Schneider. In the Sixth Volume, Krystian Zimerman has recorded piano works without opus number from 1924 and 1925 as well as the Variations for Piano op. 27 from 1935-36.

  • Worthy of especial mention among the soloists who worked with Boulez is Christiane Oelze. In Volume Two, accompanied by the Berlin Philharmonic, she sings the 3 Orchestral Songs (1913-14) and the Cantatas nos. 1 op. 29 and 2 op. 31 (here with bass Gerald Finley). In Volume Three she sings the 5 Sacred Songs op. 15, 5 Canons op. 16, 3 Traditional Rhymes op. 17 and 3 Lieder op. 18. Volume four is a re-release of her recital album (barring the previously unreleased 3 Lieder on poems by Ferdinand Avenarius), where she is accompanied by pianist Eric Schneider. Also featured with a solo disc is the Emerson String Quartet's recordings of works for String Quartet and String Trio.

  • This new 6CD set includes a fully illustrated booklet with numerous photos of Anton Webern from various periods of his life, extensive liner notes about the complete works of Webern by well-known music journalist Paul Griffiths and smartly designed CD packaging utilizing slim boxes and modern artwork.
