This performance is relaxed and easy-going, achieving some lovely -- almost Korngoldian -- sonorities in the quieter moments. . . . the orchestra plays with grace and beauty, highlighted by Gerard Schwarz's delicate, golden trumpet solos . . . Deutsche Grammophon gets amazingly clean, transparent sound from Royal Albert Hall . . . I find it most refreshing. . . . "The Unanswered Question" is a blessing. It is a stunning performance, contrasting Gerard Schwartz's questioning, distant trumpet . . . with especially raucous outbursts from the woodwinds, while the strings hover quietly. . . . it makes its point about the ethereal, eternal nature of the music.
