In less than five years, the 26-year-old German-Japanese pianist Alice Sara Ott has gained critical acclaim for her performances at major concert halls worldwide and has established herself as one of the most exciting musical talents of today. 

At the age of 13, the student of Professor Karl-Heinz Kämmerling at Mozarteum Salzburg was hailed the “Most Promising Artist” at the Hamamatsu International Piano Academy Competition, and two years later she went on to take the top prize at the Val Tidone International Piano Competition as the youngest contestant. She was invited by Hiroko Nakamura to inaugurate the final round of the popular ten-year series “The 100 Pianists” in Japan. Since then, Alice Sara Ott has given numerous performances in Japan, including solo recitals at Tokyo Opera City and orchestra concerts at Suntory Hall. 

Her engagements in previous seasons included concerts with the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in Stockholm and on tour in Japan, and the Wiener Symphoniker on tour in Germany, appearances with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the NDR Sinfonieorchester and the MDR Sinfonieorchester of Leipzig as well as performances of Liszt’s First Concerto with the London, Cincinnati and San Francisco Symphony orchestras.

In addition to her solo activities, Alice Sara Ott is a keen chamber musician and appears regularly with other leading instrumentalists at the most important European chamber festivals. She made her debuts at the Lucerne Festival in 2010 and at the Verbier Festival in 2012.

In autumn 2012 Ott appeared with the Münchner Philharmoniker in Munich and the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo, both under Lorin Maazel. The Munich concerts were also recorded as part of an Arte Maestro programme broadcast in June 2013, while the Tokyo concert was followed by a recital tour of Japan. Orchestral engagements in 2013 included the Czech Philharmonic, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Orquestra Simfňnica de Barcelona, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, London’s Philharmonia and Washington’s National Symphony Orchestra. Recitals included her debuts at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge and Chicago’s Symphony Center as well as appearances in Paris, London, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Berlin, Vienna and Munich, a joint recital with pianist Francesco Tristano and mandolinist Avi Avital which was recorded and broadcasted on Arte TV, and playing Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time with “friends” at the Moritzburg Festival.

2014 began with a European tour with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and continued with appearances with the Oslo Philharmonic, followed by a tour to Japan, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Swedish Chamber Orchestra and Orquesta Nacional de Espańa. Throughout the year Alice Sara Ott is also touring Japan and Europe in solo recitals. Highlights of the 2014/15 season include debut appearances with the Indianapolis, Toronto and Chicago Symphony orchestras and the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, and recitals throughout Europe and Japan and in Melbourne with Francesco Tristano in a programme inspired by the Ballets Russes that includes Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring and Ravel’s La Valse, among other works. It has already been recorded by Deutsche Grammophon.

In 2008 Alice Sara Ott signed as an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, with her highly successful debut recording featuring the twelve Études d’exécution transcendante by Franz Liszt, followed by her second album, encompassing the complete Waltzes of Frédéric Chopin. In 2010 her orchestral debut recording was released – the First Piano Concertos of Liszt and Tchaikovsky, with Thomas Hengelbrock conducting the Münchner Philharmoniker – and she was named “Young Artist of the Year” at the Echo Klassik awards. Her recording of Beethoven Piano Sonatas was issued in August 2011. January 2013 saw the release of a live recording of her recital at St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre, including Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, from the 2012 White Nights Festival. Another CD followed in spring 2013 in which she partners violinist Lisa Batiashvili in works by Clara Schumann. Her latest album, “Scandale” – the two-piano Ballets Russes programme with Francesco Tristano – is scheduled for release in September 2014.
