R. STRAUSS Don Quixote, Horn Concerto / Karajan 4577252

Fournier is in superb form . . . he can be wonderfully tender, as he is here with violist Giusto Cappone, again the perfect foil as Sancho . . . [Karajan]: at this stage in his career, his Strauss performances also exhibit a rare warmth and humanity. This is Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic at their most compelling, while Deutsche Grammophon's sound quality is characteristic of its time -- wide, with a satisfying aural glow.

. . . Pierre Fournier and Giusto Cappone make a very eloquent duo and Hauptmann's horn is ear-catchingly realistic and played with seemingly effortless virtuosity. Karajan brings out the best in Strauss . . . I, for one, heard so much more detail in these high resolution files, I was captivated afresh . . .
