VILLAZÓN ACCLAIMED AT METROPOLITAN OPERA
Triumphant return in Eugene Onegin
Rolando Villazón has returned in triumph to the New York Metropolitan Opera, his portrayal of Lenski in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin winning great audience acclaim and rave reviews. “… he sang with confidence and poise during ‘Kuda, Kuda’, his big aria in the duel scene,’ said The New York Times. “His impassioned delivery and heartfelt demeanor rendered his portrayal of the love-struck young poet entirely convincing.” Latinos Post said: “The moment Villazón made his entrance as Lenski in Act 1 he was greeted with warm applause from the audience … [Villazón’s voice] has a brighter and more delicate quality … the upper ranges have a more graceful and sweeter timbre … His final scene, in which he sings the famous ‘Kuda, Kuda’ was a true showstopper … the final phrases sounded as close to sobs as any human voice is capable of expressing.”
In January Deutsche Grammophon releases Villazón’s new CD, Mozart Concert Arias – a collection of rarely recorded concert arias for tenor recorded with Sir Antonio Pappano and the London Symphony Orchestra. The star tenor declares that the coming year will be “all Mozart, all the time,” adding that with the new album “… It is as if I have uncovered a whole new world. No composer speaks to me as directly as Mozart.”
Villazón will be touring the Mozart Concert Arias repertoire widely in 2014, including U-Live concerts in Prague (28 March), Munich (31 March), Vienna (3 April), Paris (6 April), Dortmund (29 April), Berlin (2 May) and London (6 May).
