. . . submit to one seamless line ¿ "here time becomes space". As in the prelude to "Parsifal", it's possible to lose all sense of external time-measurements in Karajan's hands as he melts the clock.

Towering performances . . .

[this recording of Sibelius 4] is far and away the best: just listen to how the double-basses "tell" in the opening bars, while the whole sound is really gorgeous, with exactly the right amount of resonance to bring it alive. The strings have a superb quality, the brass is splendid, and the range of this recording is remarkable . . . Plus, the playing is superb and there's a very great deal that is wonderfully well interpreted.
