The Dresden New Year’s Eve operetta gala has grown into a hugely popular holiday tradition.

This year’s programme, entitled Tonight, took the audience on a dazzling journey from Berlin to Broadway, showcasing all the dynamism and drama of twentieth-century musical theatre: from kings of operetta Paul Abraham, Robert Stolz and Paul Lincke to masters of the musical Frederick Loewe, George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein.

Sharing the stage with Thielemann this year were two of the greatest singers of our time, soprano Renée Fleming and tenor Klaus Florian Vogt – ideal choices as far as the conductor is concerned. “It’s wonderful to celebrate New Year’s Eve with friends,” he said. “I’ve worked with both of them many times and it’s always a delight, so I couldn’t ask for better company on the last night of the year.”

The concert was aired live from the Semperoper by ZDF, attracting over 1.3 million viewers.

“A perfectly staged evening,…” commented Julia Spinola for Deutschlandfunk.

Deutsche Grammophon, in its long-term cooperative association with Unitel/Classica and ZDF, is releasing “Tonight” on CD and DVD in January 2014.
