. . . you know you will be treated to a unique solo performance by someone not only renowed for her finger-picking guitar style, but also for her voice, dance and famous mane of wild, curly, black hair.

. . . she gives a mesmerizing performance . . . the result is as magical as it is lovely.

. . . it seems likely that long-time aficionados will be eager to fall, like Alice, into Wonderland's rabbit hole ¿ and new fans will find it a challenging work that rewards repeated listening.

One of the most versatile and artistically daring singers and musicians to emerge from Brazil in recent decades . . . "Wonderland" is full of surprises, both in its luxuriant, floral arrangements and production and its singular conceptual focus on songs that ask why so much in our world has gone just plain wrong, when it would be so simple to flip it over and make it all righ . . . Badi Assad . . . has succeeded in making a poignant statement without resorting to proselytizing. Although it's stacked with layers of sometimes harsh realities, "Wonderland" is ultimately, in purely musical terms, a hopeful, sunny, simply wonderful record.

. . . her new release, ¿Wonderland¿ (Edge), follows up her new less avant-garde, more radio-friendly musical direction . . . Assad goes deeper within her Brazilian roots by taking on northeastern and middle-country beats; her treatment of ¿United States of Piauí,¿ a satire on the impact of U.S. culture, is both funny and heartwarming, as she plays it with a distinctive xaxado beat. The album also includes a personal cover of The Eurythmics' ¿Sweet Dreams,¿ delivered with an emotional acoustic treatment that updates the original's Europop sensibilities; her duet with Seu Jorge on the bluesy ¿Vacilão¿ (Loser) is a truly magical moment. In a live setting, Assad often plays solo, using both her guitar and body as instruments. By inserting a drumstick between the strings and the fretboard, she creates an impromptu koto, and beats her hands against her chest and face to create percussive effects. Assad possesses a unique vocal style, and her classically trained guitar fingering is worth the ticket alone.

The Brazilian fireball oozes talent in her fusion of many different styles and approaches . . . . This is one high-energy lady ¿ exotic, cool, sexy ¿ and capable of fusing jazz, Brazilian and pop music in an exciting variety of ways. She can sound like a whole band with just her guitar, voice and percussive sounds which she creates both with her voice and guitar body.

Each song is remade to fit Assad's singular aesthetic, using a small, intuitively communicative group that includes flute and cello. She ties it all together with an overarching "Alice in Wonderland" theme that works surprisingly well, binding these disparate songs and the ideas that animate them into a cohesive whole. "Wonderland" is just the latest impressive release from a unique, surprising artist.

Badi Assad offers up a gorgeous, exotic blend of classical Brazilian sounds and contemporary instrumentation . . . a testament to her skill as an artist and musician . . . a magical, poetic soundscape . . .

. . Summa summarum: "Wonderland" bietet wunderschöne Akustik-Tableaus . . .
