The printed program ends with three dances from Falla's "Three-Cornered Hat", finding Dudamel thoroughly in his element. Best of all are the encores, in particular "Al pensar en el dueño", from Ruperto Chapí's zarzuela "Las Hijas del Zebedeo". Riga may be some distance from Madrid, but Garanča makes the number thoroughly her own, riding the breakneck orchestral accompaniment like a surfer on the crest of a wave. Here, and in the infectious "Granada" that follows, singer and conductor offer music-making that truly justifies the "gala" label.

NEW YEAR'S EVE CONCERT

The Berlin Phil Welcomes 2011 with Stars Garanèa and Dudamel Blazing Bright

The 2010 New Year's Eve concert from Berlin frames two of the most prominent stars on DG's roster in the gilt-edged splendor these two young masters merit: "One in a million" mezzo (The Independent) Elîna Garanèa, and the world's most sizzling conductor, Gustavo Dudamel.

Recorded live, this gala performance sparkles with a selection of arias and orchestral works that includes excerpts from one of Elîna Garanèa's most celebrated roles, Bizet's Carmen, and a more reflective lyric role, Marguerite in Berlioz's Damnation of Faust.

As well as providing world-class accompaniment, the Berlin Philharmonic makes a stirring contribution to the program with the overture to Berlioz's thrilling Roman Carnival and excerpts from Manuel de Falla's ballet, The Three-Cornered Hat.

Filmed in HD, the gala will be released in 16:9 widescreen with audio in PCM and DTS surround sound.
