Whether the mood is jovial, tragic or tender, Bernstein makes the music seem immense. When "Lenny" was alive, I was a bit dismissive of his conducting; hearing these CDs makes me think again.

The remasterings are clean, the packaging handsome, and there is a lot of essential interpretations nicely gathered together. The "Americans" box is particularly interesting . . . more than just another compilation.

Leonard Bernstein's uncommon combination of virtuosity and exuberance made
his recordings of American music evergreen -- and daunting to those who came after . . .These mostly live recordings have tremendous sonic force, and the solo contributors include cellist Mischa Maisky in a performance of Bloch's "Schelomo" unsurpassed for sheer emotional weight. This set makes for a handy, cost-effective cornerstone to anyone's Americana collection . . .

According to Copland: "The conductor who has always understood my music almost intuitively is Leonard Bernstein. His conducting is closest to what I had in mind when I composed the piece . . . His conducting of it in 1985 (the DG recording) left me marvelling at how he had that tough New York Philharmonic playing like angels -- well, there's only one Lenny Bernstein!" . . .
Still the best all-round interpretation with Bernstein's unique insight into Copland's music and his ability to galvanise this symphony into the epic proportions of which it is capable. Vivid recording . . .

Diapason d'or (Juin 2004)
Partout, la baguette mercurienne de Bernstein . .
