An impressive CD . . . finds Magdalena Kozená giving first-rate performances of 13 arias. Whether her voice is a mezzo or a soprano, in 2001 it was in glorious condition. Seseo's arias from Mozart's "La clemenza di Tito" open and close the programme. Kozená ripples over the scales, long and short. "Ripples" is inappropriate für an aria from Myslivecek's "Antigona", a bravura display of wide intervals and fiendish coloratura, through which she darts, dashes and dazzles with stunning vocalism, with no aspirates. She does introduce a touch of breathiness to show anguish and despair . . . Idamante's "Il padre adorato" (Mozart's "Idomeneo") exemplifies Kozená's clean attack, but everything earns admiration, including the Prague Philharmonia's playing under Michel Swierczewski.
