Nothing in Leonard Bernstein's previous achievements quitte indicated that he might produce the astonishing brilliance found in this new set of Beethoven symphonies, a set that in the realism of its engineering, in the poised polished execution of the Vienna Philharmonic, and in the controlled, tasteful vigour of Bernstein's conducting sets standards of Beethoven playing that recall Toscanini's heyday with the New York Philharmonic.
