True to form, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau makes the cycle more dramatic than anyone. His wayfarer is febrile, neurotic, even more so in 1968 with Rafael Kubelík than in his earlier version with Furtwängler. Some recoil from Fischer-Dieskau's restless, detailed probing, but for me he embodies the jilted lover with unique poignancy and intensity, from the aching opening, through the alternating hysteria and tenderness of the third song, to the hypnotic finale, with its uncanny sense of the world ebbing away.
