First, a general but enthusiastic commendation for the Original Masters as a concept, precisely the sort of project that the major companies should be embarking on: mining their archives, pooling their resources and taking the time to plan things properly. [...]
. . . a collection that shouldn't be missed on any count.

There is a wisdom and maturity in most of these readings, like some well-matured wine, that makes them rather special. Particularly in Loewe, Brahms and Wolf, the strength and power of his singing allied to his keenly honed insights into the texts are memorable . . . An absorbing conspectus of the early and late part of a great career.

Universal's fascinating foray into the early tape archives of DG and Decca is producing some terrific boxed sets. Card covers for the CDs and slim boxes optimise one's rapidly shrinking shelf space, and space must indeed be found for the three-disc set of Hans Hotter in Lieder by Schubert (including "Winterreise"), Wolf, Strauss, Loewe and Brahms, and even more significantly wartime Wagner extracts from "Dutchman", "Mastersingers" and "Walküre" (plus some outstanding Verdi, Bizet and Leoncavallo). The gruff voice, with its intermittent nasal quality, was always an impressive force as Wotan, for example, especially in such early recordings: vocal flaws are more disturbing in the latest recordings here, which date from 1975 (Brahms and Loewe Lieder for Decca).
