. . . These are electric performances, bursting with an exuberant warmth and energy. They are colorful, yet carefully voiced and articulated . . .

Never before had the symphonies been given readings of such power and authority, with the gigantic BPO giving its supreme all for its music director. These recordings taught the symphonies to countless musicians, who use them as the standard for how the works should go. But now the clincher -- is this SACD remastering worth the 70 bucks that it will cost you? For me, yes . . . I want the best sound available.

. . . this 1963 set remains the most highly rated, and with reason. Lustrous Berlin Phil playing, plus Karajan's visionary grandeur.

This is easily the finest Ninth we have yet had in stereo . . . my goodness how a modern recording adds to the impact . . . The Scherzo is [intense] . . . purity and simplicity are the keynotes . . . [3rd movement]: [an] almost religious calm. The recording was made in a church, and here one feels it clearly. The triplet variation in particular is radiant in a way that is rarely achieved in studio recordings. The finale is blessed with very good soloists . . . [Walter Berry]: How much better to have a clearly defined voice than a heavier one which is badly focussed . . . Gundula Janowitz is a beautiful young newcomer. . . It is a rich and creamy voice . . .
