Bach purists might baulk at the use of solo voices for choruses. Here, however, the matchless talents of vocalists and instrumentalists validate this choice.

The other essential ingredients is of course a team of soloists sympathetic to the concept, not just outstanding soloists, but a group familiar with the demands of consort singing. McCreesh was astute (or fortunate) in this respect, fielding a team that not only works together like a group of chamber musicians, but from first to last note sounds fully committed . . . All three arias in the "Easter Oratorio" are well sung, with Kimberly McCord sweetly sensitive in the long . . . soprano aria, and Paul Agnew superb in the exquisitely lovely "slumber" aria . . . Anyone who has yet to embrace or who has fought shy of single-voice choruses in Bach is fervently recommended to try this outstanding disc, especially now that the opportunity has arisen to do so at midprice.

L'expérience est aussi restée unique. McCreesh avait placé son Gabrieli Consort en tribune, comme à Saint Thomas. Clavecin et violoncelle juste devant la console, cordes à gauche . . . vents à droite (trompettes et timbales en retrait), et au milieu, tout devant, cinq chanteurs virtuoses, comme "Poussés" par le grand orgue. La ch¿ur de solistes trouvait "in situ" un relief nouveau, la jubilation éclatai à pleins poumons et à toute allure sans risquer la confusion -- les entrelacs du "Gloria"! Rien de "petit", au contraire, un premier verset éclatant comme jamais -- car jamais aussi clair. L'absence de rupture entre des ch¿urs et les solos donnait un élan nouveau à l'¿uvre -- la transition de "Quia respexit" à "Omnes generationes" retrouverait tout son sens, amplification de la joie intime vers la ferveur collective.

... verdaderas joyas de su fondo discográfico. ... una versión del Oratorio de Pascua y del archigrabado Magníficat en re mayor, espléndida, en el sentido estricto de la palabra. Luminosa, reluciente, generosa, desprendida ... y grabada después de veinte años de trabajo duro para conseguir consolidar el excelente sonido del coro y la orquesta. ... magnífica grabación.
