A born communicator who loves words as much as music, he has reached out to audiences way beyond the rarefied temples of opera house and recital hall . . .

I'm not Scottish, but my favourite is Rabbie Burns's 'My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose'. It's one of 17 songs from around the British Isles exquisitely sung by Wales's own Bryn Terfel in his latest 'crossover' album, entitled First Love . 'Scarborough Fair' (a duet with Kate Royal), 'Loch Lomond', 'Danny Boy', 'Blow the Wind Southerly': all your old favourites (go on, admit it) are here, sung with such measured mastery . . .

. . . the mastery with which he blends words and notes is much in evidence. There's a wide range of dynamics in his performances . . . the results are lovely . . . excellent Kate Royal . . . blends with him well in 'Scarborough Fair' . . . The overall impression is pleasant . . .

. . . it's tempting simply to sit back and revel in the seemingly limitless reserves of golden tone and bomb-proof technique, but Terfel possesses such natural charisma and inspirational recreative gifts that one is compelled to sit up and really listen. Characteristically he lavishes as much care on illuminating the poetry as he does on shaping the melodic line, and it would be a stony soul that failed to respond to his endearingly whole-hearted delivery of some (mostly) familiar repertoire . . . if the collection succeeds in winning over an entirely new audience to the magnificent sound of a classically trained voice in its refulgent prime, then that can only be a good thing. The LSO under Barry Wordsworth lap up Chris Hazell's stylish arrangements, and DG's production is in the luxury class.

He sings everything well, and is actually quite engaging in several of these songs . . . The man has integrity in both his choice of material and his delivery of it . . . The superb British Mozart specialist Kate Royal makes a welcome duet partner for him on "Scarborough Fair".

. . Recomendable.
