. . . Abbado has gathered a fine group of singers, who sing with purity and ripe expressiveness, the Chorus of Swiss Radio and Television amplifying the texture exuberantly in parts of the Laudate pueri Dominum and the Mass composed in honour of one of Naples¿s co-patrons, St Emidius.

The performance finds Abbado, his Orchestra Mozart and the Italian Swiss Radio Chorus on terrific form . . . Mingardo is overwhelming in the dark, bitter Salve Regina in F minor . . .

These are live recordings, and not only the soloists and choir but the orchestra responds to Abbado's masterful direction with what seems like a mixture of precision and cantabile flexibility.

It presents a fine "Missa brevis" . . . Diego Fasolis's Swiss-Italian choir is on good form . . . Soloists Sara Mingardo and Veronica Cangemi combine to good effect in the duet "Domine Deus": the latter gives a vivid account of a soliloquy from the oratorio "La conversione e morte di San Guglielmo duca d'Aquitania" (1731); the former gives an emotive . . . performance of the F minor version of the "Salve regina" . . . A spectacular "Laudate pueri" featuring Rachel Harnisch's fluent coloratura, incisive choral singing and colourful orchestration concludes the disc brightly . . . a surer sense of purpose and stylistic articulation in this rewarding collection.

Abbado brings real gravitas to Pergolesi's little-known "earthquake" Mass, with sparkling contributions from singers Rachel Harnisch and Sara Mingardo.
