. . . [the recording's] special strength and interest lie in the fact that the four crucial roles are filled by four of the finest sopranos of that era -- Arleen Auger, Helen Donath, Edith Mathis and Julia Varady, each at the peak of her career and each with a distinctive, contrasting vocal timbre perfectly suited for her particular role . . . It is good to be reminded how magnificent a singer Auger was, and here as Giunia she is in superb form, her peerless musicality and seamless legato meshed together in that indefinable quality that goes right to the heart of the music. Her colleagues too are in top form, their very different vocal colours providing the necessary contrast: the rich, imperious voice of Mathis; Varady with her impressive range, full-bodied in the lower register and thrilling at the top-ideal for essaying the role written for Rauzini -- while Donath is perfectly poised, with a bright, coruscating top to her voice. Indeed, a formidable team . . . Peter Schreier exhibits his celebrated musicality and beauty of tone, while Werner Krenn makes the most of the small contribution allotted to him. Orchestral playing is bright and alert under the stylish baton of Leopold Hager . . .
