. . . [Gilels' set of Beethoven's Sonatas is] as good as any ever set down, including a mighty "Hammerklavier" sonata. Also compelling are arguably the finest ever recording of the two Brahms Concertos with Eugen Jochum, some Mozart Concertos with Karl Böhm, and a delightful version of Schubert's "Trout" . . . Best of all is a delightful album of Grieg's Lyric Pieces, which I love more than almost anything else in the piano catalogue.

The late recordings are dominated by an almost complete set of Beethoven Sonatas (27 out of 32), as good as any ever set down, including a mighty "Hammerklavier" sonata. Also compelling are arguably the finest ever recordings of the two Brahms Concertos with Eugen Jochum, some Mozart Concertos with Karl Böhm, and a delightful version of Schubert's "Trout" . . . Best of all is a delightful album of Grieg's Lyric Pieces, which I love more than almost anything else in the piano catalogue.

. . . full of gems . . . some magnificent performances . . . the "Hammerklavier" took a "Gramophone" Award in 1984 and it remains a colossally imposing reading . . . the essence of the music was always there in spades . . . Dive into this Beethoven cycle anywhere and you'll find yourself wondering at his command and authority . . . I love the two Mozart piano concertos he recorded in 1973 with the Vienna Philharmonic . . . there's enormous charm and play of light and shade here, as there is in collaboration with his daughter in Schubert's F minor Fantasy . . . There are some classic recordings here: the two Brahms piano concertos with the BPO and Eugen Jochum -- masterly readings that sound as if they were hewn from solid granite, although there is great tenderness and poetry in the playing too. Gilels's disc of Grieg "Lyric Pieces" is a sheer delight and shows a different side of this great artist . . . Fauré's First Piano Quartet, with Kogan, Rostropovich and Barshai -- darker and slightly heavier than we're used to today -- is terrifically involving . . . [this wonderful set is] worth every penny.

. . . [a] noteworthy set . . . Gilels's approach to Beethoven is lucid, weighty, spacious and searching -- but not lacking for flamboyance, sparkle or wit. Gilels's sensitivity to touch and dynamics is especially rewarding, and his performances have the capacity to transport the listener. These are readings that are luminously sounded, and recorded with presence and clarity, that have stood the test of time and which continue to impress and illuminate, not least a magisterial account of the "Hammerklavier" (including a sublime 20-minute slow movement). Magisterial is also an apt description for Gilels's imposing accounts of Brahms's Piano Concertos (No.1 especially) with the Berlin Philharmonic and Eugen Jochum . . . a thoroughly commendable set, a handsome tribute to Emil Gilels's artistry across several decades . . . musical riches enshrined in this very recommendable release.

. . . [Gilels left a rich legacy,] fortunately captured in superb sound by DG's engineers. What makes this collection especially worthwhile is a generous selection of early recordings -- solo, chamber and concerto -- which, while previously available, have never sounded better.

. . . his very best recordings were made with DG who consistently provided the best venues and associates and engineers. They are all in this boxed set . . . The superiority of these mighty performances and the dynamics of the recordings immediately put these releases in a class by themselves and they happily remain so in these flawlessly engineered reissues.

. . . a fine collection . . . [this includes] both of the Brahms concertos (in best-in-class performances) and other delicious stuff, like an album of Grieg's "Lyric Pieces" played with an extraordinary delicacy.

One more DG box of note this year . . . accomplished . . .

. . Superbe portrait . . .

  • Emil Gilels - The Complete Deutsche Grammophon Recordings (Trailer)

Emil Gilels was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. Three decades after his death, many of his recordings still represent the benchmark to which all others are compared. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of his birth in 2016 Deutsche Grammophon brings together for the first time all of its Gilels recordings in a 24CD box-set with original covers, including seven discs of rare Russian recordings that he made at the beginning of his career.
