Honey-toned. Velvety. A golden sound . . . For nearly five decades, the marquee virtuoso, one of concert music's most charming emissaries, has infused his playing with sweetness and ease that can smooth out the most unruly passages, infusing masterworks with rich life . . . Most of these recordings maintain considerable value for anyone who wants to hear bravura playing . . . Perlman shows us how organically he works with orchestras and how he can architect harmonically and stylistically innovative scores. The heart of the set is the finely etched recordings of the Mozart violin concertos -- the highlight of which is Perlman and Zukerman playing the Sinfonia Concertante together -- performed with elegance . . . I'm glad there's a new set of higher quality recordings to give us occasion to discuss Perlman's legacy.

The basics of Perlman's approach are easy to enumerate: a fluent technique honed to near perfection, a glowing tone . . . unmannered but secure musicality, innate good taste and an ability to adapt to the performing styles of any number of musical collaborators . . . The set's first disc is to my mind its best, a coupling of the Berg and Stravinsky violin concertos with Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony, the Stravinsky razor-sharp but emotionally earnest . . . [in the Berg, Perlman touches] the heart-strings without sounding either abrasive or excessively forceful . . . Saint-Saens's Third and Wieniawski's Second provide further showcases for Perlman's beaming style, the former especially. The best of the duo-sonata performances are with Barenboim: lyrical Mozart and a genuine meeting of minds, invariably grounded in a secure performing tradition . . . truly beautiful playing, at its best in the various slow movements where Perlman's yielding tone, duly tempered, recalls Grumiaux at his finest . . . The coupling of the "Concertone" and "Sinfonia concertante" with Pinchas Zukerman doubling on viola is the highlight among the various Mozart works with orchestra . . . [also of note are] strong performances of the Franck Sonata with Ashkenazy coupled with Brahms's Horn Trio with Ashkenazy and Barry Tuckwell, a pleasing CD of Bach arias with Kathleen Battle, a sequence of virtuoso showpieces with the New York Philharmonic . . . Itzhak Perlman is a great violinist whose life and art should be widely celebrated . . . [his immense achievement is amply proved in] this handsome collection . . .

The first two concertos are essential: the Berg seriously passionate and devastatingly beautiful, the Stravinsky spiky and pungently propelled . . . The Elgar Concerto with Barenboim is often underestimated; the balance of nobility and tenderness is touching . . . [this box-set is where to come] for Perlman's Mozart too: concertos with James Levine, a delightful Sinfonia Concertante (partnered by Zukerman), and especially the complete sonatas with Barenboim . . . [Perlman's "Complete Recordings" offers] a legacy of the highest quality and astonishing breadth.
