. . . all of these have been remastered from original masters and the result is a feast for the ears . . . This set comprehensively explores post-war DG and presents a who's who of recording artists from the 1950s and 1960s . . . This is another super bargaion at a very low price. Get it before it disappears. And thanks, DGG!

This celebrates a decade of extraordinary achievement for DG . . . some of these performances have never been surpassed. Sviatoslav Richter playing Schumann, Clara Haskil playing Mozart, and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's earliest lieder recordings are irreplaceable. There are fascinating one-offs, like Paul Hindemith conducting two of his most approachable orchestral pieces . . . Finest of all is the great German conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler in Schubert's Ninth, and a wonderfully rustic 88th from Haydn . . . excellent sound throughout.

Everything we now take for granted about Deutsche Grammophon today the famous cartouche, the attention to editorial and technical detail, the perfect alignment of artist and repertoire -- can be traced back to these beautifully-recorded albums from the pre-stereo era . . . Beautiful photography across the 150-page color booklet, replete with photos of the artists and the post-war era is also included. So, as you can guess for yourself now, this delightful, nay uber comprehensive 51 CD Box-Set explores the DG post-war success story just perfectly.

The DG represented in this massive box of rarities is a label under post-War reconstruction, fascinating in its rigour and frugality . . . The audio quality is exemplary and the house style feels secure . . . I don't think I've ever heard a more vivacious account of Mendelssohn's "Midsummer Night's Dream" than Fricsay's and you'd need ears of cold steel to resist Fritz Lehmann's account of the Brahms "German Requiem". Impossible to imagine that technology pushed such elysian performances into a closet. Here they are, revived on 50 CDs . . .

. . . a well-chosen selection that best represents their artists in their established repertoire or to which they aspired . . . an historic document, a discerning choice of repertoire and performers . . . DGG's mono recordings are models of clarity and reality.

. . . "The Mono Era" subscribes to an audio aesthetic that places warmth, transparency and expert balancing as priorities . . . [two great sets of Reger orchestral variations are included in performances that] unfurl this marvellous music with a combination of refinement and humour . . . Bronislaw Gimpel's reading of Lalo's "Symphonie espagnole" stands out as exceptional . . . the most outstanding pianist collaborator is Hertha Klust for bass Josef Greindl in an unusually probing interpretation of Schubert's "Winterreise", the two artists communing as one . . . Ferdinand Leitner casts a perfectionist eye across Haydn's Symphonies Nos 100 and 102, phrasing with the utmost care and drawing some superb playing from the Bamberg Symphony . . . a CD of cello concertos by Haydn (D major) and Schumann featuring Enrico Mainardi with Fritz Lehmann conducting is so well recorded you can virtually tell that the instrument he's playing is of superb quality . . . Even younger collectors who have no prior knowledge of these performances are likely to come away from this set with at least some of their musical preconceptions profoundly altered, which is surely what listening to great recordings is all about.
