He gives a fascinating account of the Barcarolle, austere and detached, but also intensely focused . . . For all its passing beauties, there's a sense throughout the disc that he's more concerned with what he is still discovering in the music . . .

. . . [Pollini's approach is elegant] rather than flamboyant but turbulence lurks beneath the surface . . . Without tearing apart the fabric, he is constantly underlining elements that destabilise: chromatic meandering, disruptive trills, the tension between lyricism and metre. Fascinating, and the virtuosity is still there.

The misty effect is enhanced by here by the respectful distance of the piano, from which Pollini's playing emerges . . . in this music, playing to the gallery would be inappropriate.

["Chopin: Late Works"] makes for fascinating listening . . . there are many moments of wonderful insight, such as the delicate tempo fluctuations in the "Barcarolle" . . .

. . . exquisite works . . . One of the highlights of the album is the gently flowing Barcarolle, as well as the six Mazurkas and three Waltzes . . .
