The Vienna performance, issued for the first time on DVD here, is conducted very stylishly and energetically by Nello Santi. Piero Cappuccilli as Gérard and Gabriela Benacková as Madeleine are the other excellent principals. Domingo is in his element in this opera, and his performance is both commanding and tasteful . . . Otto Schenk's Vienna production is extremely effective and the choral singing in the big scenes is excellent. The sound is very good for its age and the booklet includes a helpfully detailed synopsis with track points indicated.

Andrea Chénier es una ópera de tenor y cuando uno de los grandes borda el papel todavía resulta más fascinante. Plácido Domingo en 1981 tiene la voz, el estilo y el temperamento romántico que el rol precisa. Desde su «improvviso» hasta el dúo final, Domingo resulta no sólo creíble sino seductor en cuanto al despliegue de medios canoros e interpretativos que demuestra. Maravilla su calidez, «slancio» y canto arrebatado. Chénier se yergue como uno de sus mejores papeles, puesto que la dimensión heroica y a la vez noble y sentimental del rol le va como anillo al dedo a un Domingo exultante, sin problemas incluso ante la subida al agudo . . . Domingo y Cappuccilli en lo vocal y Schenk en lo escénico hacen irresistible este Andrea Chénier cuyo procesado a DVD tanto se ha hecho esperar.
