. . . the singing is fine, with Matti Salminen as Sarastro as sonorous as he has been for decades, and Elena Mosuc a deadly accurate Queen of Night.

Matti Salminen is a tower of strength as Sarastro, singing with great warmth and sensitivity as well as nobility. The slight vulnerability that occasionally flecks his much experienced voice is all gain as far as his beneficent engagement with the outcome of the human drama is concerned, and just to watch his eyes is to appreciate that all though of the role as a mere cipher of authority has been left far behind. Elen Mosuc's Queen of the Night . . . spits fire in the second, much enhanced by the sparking orchestral imagery secured by the conductor, who gets his players to perform in ripping period style on modern instruments.

. . . the performances is quintessential Harnoncourt -- brilliant . . . The overture is simply fabulous; the Zurich Orchestra sounds like a single instrument played by Haroncourt's ten fingers; the musicians practically breathe together . . . Vocally, Harnoncourt has assembled an excellent cast consisting of the legendary Finnish bass Matti Salminen . . . and relative unknowns, all of whom are superb . . . The two principal lovers, tenor Christoph Strehl and soprano Julia Kleiter, are major finds (in addition, Kleiter is exceptionally pretty and an outstanding actress). Monastatos, Rudolf Schasching, is wonderfully funny in his comically menacing way . . . Most interesting to me was Elena Mosuc . . . she has the full arsenal of a quintessential Queen . . . She was not only able to negotiate the extreme upper range, but also managed to sing all the trills, including a couple (on the word "verloren") that most other singers miss. More interestingly, she really interpreted the arias, giving full value to the words of "O zittre nicht" and, in "Der Hölle Rache", you could almost hear her spit venom.

Harnoncourts im Verein mit Martin Kusej gefertigte geniale, ganz ungewohnte Neudeutung von Mozarts Jahrtausendwerk "Die Zauberflöte" am Opernhaus Zürich: Matti Salminen als eleganter Sarastro, der in seinem Verlies geschändete Mädchen und versehrte Jünglinge hält, Ruben Drole als witziger, vogelkotbeschmierter Papageno, Julia Kleiter und Christoph Strehl bezaubernd als Pamina und Tamino.

Aufhorchen lässt insbesondere Julia Kleiters sehr kultiviert klingender Sopran. Sie spielt und singt die Pamina vorbildlich und weiß zwischen Innigkeit und Erregung ("Ach, ich fühl's") vielschichtig zu variieren . . . Elena Mosuc kombiniert als Königin der Nacht die Wärme ihre dramatischen Koloratursoprans mit kraftvoller Attacke . . . Insgesamt eine tadellos musizierte "Zauberflöte" in einer vor allem intellektuell anregenden Inszenierung.

Sie war das Kultur-Fernseh-Ereignis des letzten Jahres schlechthin, die "Zauberflöte" von Harnoncourt und Kusej am Opernhaus Zürich . . .

. . . Harnoncourt d'abord: une décision, un "drive", une sonorité aussi qui impressionnent, dès l'Ouverture; mais des accélérations aussi, bien des libertés de phrase, de rythme surtout . . . une démonstration d'autorité unique aujourd'hui . . . on croit à chaque instant aux personnages et à la facon qu'ils ont de réagir, qui ne fait qu'un avec leur facon de chanter, ici même Julia Kleiter chante "Ach ich fühl's" . . . jamais, on vous l'affirme, on n'a vu et entendu réalisation plus crédible, saisissante, comme nécessaire de "Ach ich fühl's". De même la scène, époustouflante de vivacité scénique, entre la Reine et Pamina, Elena Mosuc réalisant dans sa "Hölle Rache" un tour de force mémorable.

. . . Ruben Drole en particulier, Papageno délicieusement rustique . . . Julia Kleiter est charmante, Elena Mosuc, qui prouve son aisance dans des répertoires très variés, ne manque pas de séduction . . . une "Flûte" qui ne ressemble à aucune autre . . .
