Balmorhea co-founder and multi-instrumentalist Michael A. Muller deepens his compositional exploration with Mirror Music, his debut album for DG. A study in reflection, the album features 10&nbsp;tracks created in collaboration with 11 international artists. Each piece initiated from a foundation of Muller&rsquo;s ambient compositions, written on Mellotron, Oberheim Two-Voice synthesizer and Rhodes organ. He then invited a hand-picked group of fellow artists to contribute to specific tracks.
Mirror Music opens with tactile, open-tuned 12-string guitar from Danny Paul Grody, segueing into shimmering pedal steel guitar from Chuck Johnson, then into Vestals&rsquo; operatic apparitions. Further tracks feature the breathy bass clarinet of Jonathan Sielaff and guitar from Ilyas Ahmed; the lonesome desert timbres of Tortoise&rsquo;s Douglas McCombs; skittering rhythms from Indonesian-Australian percussionist Rama Parwata; modular synthesized reflections from Jefre Cantu-Ledesma; sonorous vocals from Hania Rani; soft, reverberant synthesis from Jon Porras; and emotive cello from Clarice Jensen.

Michael A. Muller deepens his compositional exploration with Mirror Music

Nearly two decades into his career as co-founder and multi-instrumentalist of the ensemble Balmorhea, Michael A. Muller deepens his compositional exploration with Mirror Music&mdash;available from Deutsche Grammophon digitally today and on a limited vinyl pressing on 15&nbsp;March.&nbsp;Also out now is the track &ldquo;Mirror 8 (featuring Hania Rani)&rdquo;, accompanied by an atmospheric music video shot in black and white by renowned British photographer and director Rich Stapleton.
After a rework for Icelandic pianist V&iacute;kingur &Oacute;lafsson, Michael A. Muller officially signed to Deutsche Grammophon in Fall 2023 with reissues of his debut Lower River and its counterpart, Lower River Reworks. Writing and producing from his Elyria Sound studio in Los Angeles, he creates wholly experiential music that evades trope as a rule and exists in a space between the darkly occluded and the atmospherically spacious, with wide-reaching references, from 1950s jazz via 19th-century classical music to contemporary avant-garde and ambient works.&nbsp;
Mirror Music, Muller&rsquo;s debut full-length for Deutsche Grammophon, is a study in reflection, with 10&nbsp;tracks created in collaboration with 11 international artists. Thematically, the album is meant to feel familiar yet distant, a half-remembered dream that challenges what music ought to be while inspiring inward-facing interpretation. Formed by the inexplicable harmony of human connection and one&rsquo;s impermanence in the wider scheme of self, existence and place, Mirror Music is at once holding out a magnifying glass and offering an open window to an ever-expanding cosmos.
Each piece initiated from a foundation of Muller&rsquo;s ambient compositions, written on Mellotron, Oberheim Two-Voice synthesizer, and Rhodes organ. Afterward, he shared the work with an interdisciplinary group of artists, inviting each to contribute to specific tracks. Mirror Music opens with tactile, open-tuned 12-string guitar from Danny Paul Grody, segueing into shimmering pedal steel guitar from Chuck Johnson, then falling into Vestals&rsquo; operatic apparitions. Following tracks feature the breathy bass clarinet of Jonathan Sielaff, and guitar from Ilyas Ahmed; the lonesome desert timbres of Tortoise&rsquo;s Douglas McCombs; skittering rhythms from Indonesian-Australian percussionist Rama Parwata; modular synthesized reflections from Jefre Cantu-Ledesma; sonorous vocals from Hania Rani; soft, reverberant synthesis from Jon Porras; and concluding with emotive cello from Clarice Jensen. Together, the pieces form a cohesive movement through an assembly of two halves&mdash;a diptych of images braided into a single vision; holding a unified form whilst flashes of errant and haunting light refract through the proverbial glass.
This idea is underscored by the album&rsquo;s cover art by Los Angeles painter John Zabawa. Mirror Music was mixed to quarter-inch, two-track tape by Muller and Chuck Johnson at the latter&rsquo;s Cirrus Oxide studio in Oakland, CA; it was mastered by Berlin-based Zino Mikorey and mixed for Dolby Atmos by Matthias Stalter at Munich&rsquo;s ThreeDee Music.
Released today alongside the album is&nbsp;&ldquo;Mirror 8&rdquo;, featuring Polish composer Hania Rani, whose haunting vocals&nbsp;offer the lone lyrical content on the album. British photographer Rich Stapleton has also directed a music video to go along with the track. In this&nbsp;monochromatic&nbsp;film, we follow the exploration of a character (played by Bridget Gao) coursing through contrasting natural elements and abstract dreamscapes. The imagery echoes the introspective nature of the music. As the director&nbsp;notes, &ldquo;The unspoken context of &lsquo;Mirror 8&rsquo; deals with the concept of reflection; exploring the feeling of being trapped in one&rsquo;s own mind and replaying moments from a past that no longer exists as a mechanism for transcendence.&rdquo; &nbsp;
&ldquo;I met Michael some years ago through a mutual friend,&rdquo; recalls Hania Rani. &ldquo;But because he was based in Los Angeles, we fostered our friendship only virtually in the beginning. In the early months of 2022, he sent me a rough draft of a song for his upcoming album and asked if I would like to contribute to it. The music I received included just a couple of minimalistic chords, so I was a bit confused about how much I could add on top of the track and wondered if my contribution would be slightly too radical a gesture. I decided to follow my intuition and approach the proposed soundscape with something personal, by adding elements that were surrounding me at the moment: my voice, Rhodes and Prophet. I hoped that by doing so I could touch on an idiosyncratic quality of the tune and speak to its core; which for me was expressed through the repetitive and utterly meditative handful of simple chords and bell sounds. There is visibly something ineffable about this track&mdash;despite its dark tone and the acerbic flavour of the voice, you sense its ease and simplicity. The literal &lsquo;low-key&rsquo; leaves you with a taste of melancholy and serenity at the same time.&rdquo;

Before Barbed Wire - Balmorhea

Before Barbed Wire is an homage to the late American contemporary pianist George Winston. In the words of Balmorhea: "We got to know this beautiful piece of music when we were children listening to the Winston version from his seminal album &lsquo;Plains.&rsquo; The track is fragile, nostalgic and quintessentially American with its pastoral and wide-open gestures. There was always an openness to his music, something at once from the landscape and the heart. We hope this version picks up where he left off. The cover image, originally made for geological survey purposes, comes from the same series of photographs used for Balmorhea&rsquo;s 2022 EP Solanales.
