Lang Lang Releases Tony Ann’s Icarus from Upcoming Album Piano Book 2

Arranged for piano four hands, and performed by Lang Lang and Tony Ann, Icarus comes out on 3 October 2025
Piano Book 2 offers 32 miniature masterpieces for all generations, curated from classical, contemporary and online culture
Pianist Lang Lang unveils his latest single, Icarus, featuring the music of innovative Chinese-Canadian composer and pianist Tony Ann. Released on 3 October 2025, this exclusive four-hands version is taken from Lang Lang’s upcoming album Piano Book 2 and performed by the two artists as a duo. Out worldwide on Deutsche Grammophon on 17 October, Piano Book 2 brings together iconic classical works, new contemporary pieces and themes from anime, films and video games.
“Icarus is a really beautiful piece, and one of my favourites on this album,” says Lang Lang. “Right from the start, you get a sense of departure – from earth into the universe. When I play Icarus, it feels as if I’m flying. I hope we will see more remarkable works like this from the next generation of composers.”
Tony Ann himself describes the work as a deeply personal project and a turning point in his creative journey. Conceived as a musical expression of longing, transformation and overcoming boundaries, it draws on the myth of Icarus flying too close to the sun, but aims to leave space for hope and the possibility of reaching new heights.
One of the leading young voices in today’s contemporary classical scene, Tony Ann is known for a unique style that bridges classical tradition and pop influences. He first gained international attention through social media, especially with his #playthatword series, and now has over 4 million followers. His output ranges from solo piano pieces to major collaborations with artists like The Chainsmokers and Don Diablo. He continues to broaden the genre with concept albums such as 360°, released earlier this year via Decca/Universal.
“Hearing Lang Lang play Icarus is an overwhelming and humbling experience,” says Tony Ann, who recently joined his colleague on stage during a spectacular Piano Book 2 launch event in Beijing. “His artistry captures both the hope and the risk at the heart of this music. It’s an honour to contribute to Piano Book 2 and to share this journey with listeners worldwide.”
Building on the triumph of his best-selling 2019 release Piano Book – a global phenomenon with over 1.2 billion streams to date – Lang Lang’s new collection of 32 carefully selected miniature masterpieces draws inspiration from the wishes of fans, modern educational practice, and repertoire especially close to his own heart. With its mix of classical favourites, contemporary works and highlights from today’s digital and popular culture, Piano Book 2 underlines Lang Lang’s vision: to inspire passion for the piano across generations, backgrounds and skill levels.
Previous digital singles from the album – Liszt’s Consolation No. 2 and Sadness and Sorrow from Naruto – are already available across all platforms.

Deutsche Grammophon Releases Lang Lang’s World Premiere Recording of Long-Lost Chopin Waltz

The Waltz in A minor “Found in New York” (2024 World Premiere Recording) will be released on 8 November 2024
“This is not the most complicated music by Chopin, but it is one of the most authentic Chopin styles that you can imagine” Lang Lang
Berlin, 1 November 2024. Exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist Lang Lang has made the world premiere recording of a newly unearthed 200-year-old waltz, believed to be the work of the great Polish composer and pianist Fryderyk Chopin (1810-49). The Yellow Label is delighted to announce that it will release the Waltz in A minor “Found in New York” – premiered by Lang Lang on 27 October in New York – as a digital single on Friday 8 November.
As reported by The New York Times, the manuscript bearing the waltz was discovered by curator Robinson McClellan while he was cataloguing a collection of memorabilia bequeathed to the Morgan Library & Museum in Manhattan. The music, in tiny notation, appears on a piece of paper the size of an index card (10x12cm), is headed “Valse”, and has the name “Chopin” at the top of the page (this is not the composer’s signature, but an addition by another hand). Having carried out comprehensive tests on the paper and ink, analysed the penmanship and musical style, and worked closely with Chopin specialists, the Morgan believes the work to be, in all likelihood, a previously unknown waltz by the composer, written in around 1830-35.
Chopin composed waltzes throughout his career. Notable for their elegance and refinement, and brimming with invention, they redefined the notion of the “salon piece”. Many of them display contrasting moods, from whirling energy to melancholy reflection. The “Found in New York” Waltz, in A minor, is just 48 bars long and starts in darkly dramatic style, with soft, dissonant notes exploding into stormy chords. As Dr Artur Szklener, Director of the Fryderyk Chopin Institute observes, “the piece has features of the brilliant style, which agrees with the indicated possible time of composition”.
This Chopin release follows hot on the heels of DG’s recent trio of world premiere recordings of “A Very Little Night Music”, a rediscovered work by Mozart. The previously unknown Serenade in C major, K 648, was discovered by researchers from the International Mozarteum Foundation in the Carl Ferdinand Becker collection of the Municipal Music Library in Leipzig. Consisting of seven miniature movements for string trio, it was introduced to the public on 19 September 2024 by the International Mozarteum Foundation. Deutsche Grammophon issued three different interpretations of the work last month: a version for two violins, cello and harpsichord, a second for two violins, double bass and harpsichord, and an orchestral adaptation.

Lang Lang Celebrates the Year of the Dragon

A new 50-track digital compilation brings together all the pianist’s recordings of Chinese music
Year of the Dragon – Songs from China includes the complete Dragon Songs album, works by Tan Dun and favourite pieces from Piano Book, among others
It also features two brand-new recordings – Snowflakes (listen here) and Moon is Bright Lullaby
The album comes out on 27 September 2024, alongside a Dolby Atmos reissue of Dragon Songs
According to the traditional Chinese lunar calendar, 2024 is the year of the dragon. To mark this auspicious occasion, Lang Lang is celebrating his heritage with a digital album comprising all his Deutsche Grammophon recordings of Chinese music. Year of the Dragon – Songs from China presents, among other works, all the music from the Dragon Songs album, including the “Yellow River” Piano Concerto and, to open with, Autumn moon on a calm lake – one of the pianist’s most successful streaming tracks. The compilation also takes in Tan Dun’s Eight Memories in Watercolour and complete soundtrack to The Banquet; a selection of pieces from Piano Book; and two new recordings – Snowflakes and Moon is Bright Lullaby. Snowflakes will be available to stream/download from 13 September, while Year of the Dragon is released two weeks later, on 27 September.
As well as featuring a wealth of solo pieces, the album offers ensemble and orchestral works in which Lang Lang is joined by an array of other world-renowned artists. These include tenor Andrea Bocelli and soprano Lei Jia, the China Philharmonic Orchestra and Long Yu, the Shanghai Opera House Chorus, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and Tan Dun, and the Prague Symphony Orchestra and Alexandre Desplat.
Snowflakes, by Shuai Zhang, was originally performed by a children’s choir at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics opening ceremony. “It was like music from paradise,” recalls Lang Lang. On Year of the Dragon he performs a new solo piano arrangement created by Shuai Zhang. “I’m very happy to work with Shuai Zhang, who is from my home city and the same age as me, so we share a lot of the same memories,” notes the pianist. “This melody is almost like a wave of love and passion, and it gives you joyfulness.”
By contrast, Moon is Bright Lullaby has a far longer history – a traditional tune from northeastern China (Lang Lang’s home region), here arranged by Zhang Zhao, it resonates deeply with many people across the country. “This melody transports me back to my home town in the cold winter,” says Lang Lang. “At my grandparents’ place, my cousins and I fell asleep to this beautiful melody … This is a new arrangement by a remarkable composer and I like it very much.”
Also out on 27 September is a brand-new Dolby Atmos mix of Dragon Songs. Originally released in 2006, the album was based on the idea of cultural exchange – having introduced many western classical masterpieces to Chinese audiences, Lang Lang was keen to reverse the process. As he said at the time, “I love the idea of making connections between Chinese culture and the rest of the world.” Gramophone praised the album’s “fascinating variety of traditional Chinese songs” especially those pairing the piano with Chinese instruments. “Not only do they marvellously showcase Fan Wei’s pipa (Chinese lute), Zhang Jiali’s guanzi (double-reed pipe) and Ji Wei’s guzheng (Chinese zither), they also reveal Lang Lang as an inspiring and musicianly collaborator.”
Filmed in 2006, the Dragon Songs documentary traces a journey back to Lang Lang’s roots, following his return home to China to reconnect with family and friends, and share the importance of having a personal connection to the music. The film is available on Deutsche Grammophon’s streaming platform STAGE+ and can be watched free of charge until the end of October.

Hinter all dem Spaß stecken viele kluge Einfälle.
In celebration of 100 years of The Walt Disney Company, globally acclaimed piano virtuoso Lang Lang is set to transport listeners into the magical world of snow castles and flying carpets with his latest album, The Disney Book.
This enchanting musical journey through iconic movie melodies, reimagined in new versions written especially for him by some of the world’s leading arrangers, invites fans of all ages to enjoy classical music through Lang Lang’s unique interpretations. The recording will be released on 16 September on Deutsche Grammophon, in collaboration with Disney Music Group.
A truly international production, with recording sessions taking place in London, New York, Shanghai and Paris, The Disney Book traces the history of music in Disney films from the 1920s to the present day, whilst also reflecting Lang Lang’s own personal journey. Lang Lang explains: “Animation sparked my imagination and transported me to other worlds. The music was a big part of this experience – and led to my life-long love of classical music. There is such a variety of styles in Disney songs; truly, something to inspire everyone. I hope that people of all ages will enjoy this recording and experience the joy that we all felt the first time we saw a Disney film.”
The album’s first single, released today, is “Feed the Birds” from Mary Poppins – which Walt Disney himself famously declared to be his favourite Disney melody. The film’s co-composers, brothers Richard and Robert Sherman, were regularly asked to join Walt in his office on a Friday afternoon to play it for him; they even continued this tradition after the legendary animator’s death in 1966. Lang Lang’s own version of “Feed the Birds” features an accompanying video, shot as dawn broke over Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park in California.
<externalmediaembed class="mceNonEditable mce-youtube" type="youtube" data-id="CzYwjc9MVU0"></externalmediaembed>
Lang Lang has long been inspired by Disney music. He says, “When I was thirteen, I visited Tokyo Disneyland; it was the first time I had heard ‘It’s a Small World’ and the melody stayed with me all day – and long afterwards.” Fast forward to 2016 and he was performing at the grand opening of Shanghai Disney Resort with a unique rendition of “Let It Go” from Frozen.
The Disney Book features joyous new versions of songs from Pinocchio and The Jungle Book to Frozen and Encanto, along with several collaborators from across the globe. Andrea Bocelli provides vocals for “You’ll Be in My Heart” from Tarzan; singer-songwriter and pianist Jon Batiste revisits his Oscar®-winning Soul score with “It’s All Right”; and Colombian singer-songwriter Sebastián Yatra performs the Oscar-nominated song “Dos Oruguitas” from Encanto. There are also guest appearances from guitarist Miloš, Chinese erhu player Guo Gan, and Lang Lang’s wife Gina Alice, plus the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Robert Ziegler.
In order to showcase the range and versatility of the piano, Lang Lang enlisted some of the world’s top arrangers including Sir Stephen Hough, Natalie Tenenbaum and Randy Kerber. Whilst maintaining the essence of the melodies, the imaginative and sophisticated arrangements – whether for solo piano or piano and full orchestra – conjure the sound worlds of Debussy and Chopin, as well as the virtuosity of Liszt and Horowitz. Sir Stephen Hough comments: “I’ve been a huge admirer of Lang Lang for years and I was delighted to be asked to arrange some Disney songs for him. I loved the challenge of transforming these popular songs, beloved by generations of children and parents, into solo piano pieces, rooted in the classical tradition of the great transcribers of the past.”
The Disney Book is a continuation of Lang Lang’s unbridled commitment to music education. Much like his hugely successful 2019 album Piano Book, which brought together some of Lang Lang’s favourite pieces as a way to encourage budding young musicians, The Disney Book aims to inspire people of all ages to explore classical music. It is a heartfelt gift to all generations and especially meaningful to Lang Lang, having recently become a father himself.
Lang Lang’s The Disney Book tells the story of a century of magical, uplifting entertainment for all. The album will be available in all digital formats as well as a number of physical versions including standard, deluxe and limited editions. It will also be accompanied by a number of live dates at major international venues including the UK and US.

Lang Lang releases 'The Goldberg Variations Extended Edition'

Following on from the worldwide success of his Goldberg Variations album, Lang Lang now releases a series of new recordings as part of the Goldberg Variations Extended Deluxe Edition on 12 February 2021. These are some of the works in which the pianist immersed himself during his intensive study of J.S. Bach’s Baroque masterpiece.
“The more time I spent with the Goldberg Variations, the more I wanted to know about Bach, his contemporaries and the composers he later inspired,” explains Lang Lang. “Each of the new pieces I’ve recorded for this project have added to my understanding of his music.”
The Goldberg Variations Extended Edition includes no fewer than seven bonus tracks. First among them are the exquisite “Bist du bei mir”, an aria by Bach’s slightly younger contemporary Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel which appears in transcription in the Anna Magdalena Notebook, and an arrangement of the Sinfonia from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. Listeners will also be able to enjoy Wilhelm Kempff’s sublime transcription for solo piano of the Siciliano from Bach’s Second Flute Sonata and the Andante from Bach’s Italian Concerto. In addition, Lang Lang has chosen the Arabesque by Schumann, who looked to his predecessors for inspiration and saw Bach’s music as the purest source of strength for a renewal of the art form. Finally, the new edition features a contemplative arrangement of “Sheep may safely graze”, which Lang Lang has recorded with his wife, the German-Korean pianist Gina Alice, and the Andante from Johann Gottlieb Goldberg’s Sonata in D major – a reflection of the fact that during his long years of exploring Bach’s monumental keyboard work, Lang Lang also studied the surviving music of the talented young harpsichordist and composer who lent the work its name.
This digital project is a companion to the album released in September 2020 featuring Lang Lang’s studio and live recordings of the Goldberg Variations. The new Extended Edition will be accompanied by filmed performances of each work, as well as further videos in which the pianist discusses aspects of his interpretations.
The Goldberg Variations Extended Edition is released today, 12 February 2021.

The superstar pianist, who waited 20 years before playing Johann Sebastian Bach’s monumental composition in public, has finally achieved his goal of recording the Goldberg Variations.

Join Lang Lang for a special release-day presentation from Beijing

“This is a very important dream-come-true moment”, says Lang Lang.
The superstar pianist, who waited 20 years before playing Johann Sebastian Bach’s monumental composition in public, has finally achieved his goal of recording the Goldberg Variations. The result of two decades of deep study and personal reflection, his vision of Bach’s Aria and 30 Variations is out now.
Lang Lang will mark the global release of his new album today with a special introduction from the historic Temple (东景缘, Dongjingyuan) in Beijing – site of the old imperial printing house and a former Buddhist shrine, meticulously renovated in recent years to preserve its multi-layered history. The pianist will perform extracts from the Goldberg Variations and talk about the intense personal connection he feels to Bach’s music. You can watch it here:
<externalmediaembed class="mceNonEditable mce-youtube" type="youtube" data-id="Bm2OTmIGOgA"></externalmediaembed>
Also available from today is a super deluxe edition featuring not only Lang Lang’s studio recording but a performance captured live in concert at Leipzig’s Thomaskirche, where the composer worked and is buried. This coupling of studio and live recordings, a world first for the “Goldbergs”, offers fascinating insights into the art of interpretation. Lang Lang’s performances intensify the work’s breath-taking blend of contrapuntal complexity, diverse musical styles and life-affirming spontaneity.
Fuelled by a lifelong passion for one of the most challenging but rewarding compositions in the entire classical repertoire, Lang Lang’s latest album represents a major milestone in an already stellar career. “I would say performing and recording this concert leads me into the next level of piano playing,” he explains. “I’m now 38 and, while that’s not old, I think the time was right for a new stage in my artistic development,” he adds. “I’ve moved into new terrain with the Goldberg Variations and really immersed myself fully in this project. My goal as an artist is to keep becoming more self-aware and more knowledgeable, as well as to keep offering inspiration to others. It’s an ongoing process, but this project has taken me a little further along the path.”
Everything the pianist does is underpinned by his belief that “music makes life better – it heals, unites and inspires, and it makes us better people”. The Goldberg Variations is his latest musical offering and aims to encourage a new generation of fans to explore Bach’s astonishing work.

Lang Lang records Bach’s Monumental Goldberg Variations

Lang Lang has realised a lifelong dream by recording Johann Sebastian Bach’s monumental keyboard work, the Goldberg Variations, often described as “a musical Everest”. It will be released on 4 September in two complementary performances given by the pianist: the first was recorded in a single take in concert at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, Bach’s workplace for almost 30 years and site of his grave; the second was made soon after in the seclusion of the studio. The two recordings can be purchased together as part of a super deluxe edition, a world first simultaneous live and studio album release.
Listen to and watch a first pre-release track of the aria in both audio and video. Additionally we are offering an exclusive limited edition 4CD set of both live performance and studio recording together with an Art Card in our DG Store.
“I’m now 38 and, while that’s not old, I think the time was right for a new stage in my artistic development,” comments Lang Lang.
The pianist’s long journey into the soul of one of the greatest landmarks of world culture began with childhood lessons in Bach’s music in his native China. He was just 17 when he played the Goldberg Variations from memory for the conductor and pianist Christoph Eschenbach, an unforgettable experience for both musicians. Lang Lang subsequently sought expert advice from leading interpreters of the composer’s music, conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt and harpsichordist and early keyboard specialist Andreas Staier among them.
Having allowed his relationship with the work to evolve naturally over time, Lang Lang finally felt ready to record Bach’s great Aria and 30 variations. In early March 2020, shortly before beginning his studio sessions, he gave a poignant public performance of the work in Leipzig. “Playing in the Thomaskirche, where Bach is buried, was unbelievably emotional for me,” he recalls. “I’ve never felt as close to a composer as I did during that recital. The live version is very spontaneous, whereas in the studio version my playing is different – very considered and reflective. In a concert situation you experience the 100-minute work as a whole. In the studio you can focus on individual details and nuances, and of course that can affect the musical experience quite substantially.”
It’s believed that Bach wrote the Goldberg Variations for his pupil, a teenage harpsichord virtuoso named Johann Gottlieb Goldberg. The composer’s first biographer reported that the piece was commissioned by the Russian ambassador to the Dresden court, an insomniac, as a “soothing and cheerful” work for young Goldberg to play during the night. Published in late 1741, it demands total spiritual focus from the performer.
“This isn’t just the most exceptional and creative work in the keyboard repertoire, it’s also the most multidimensional,” observes Lang Lang. “It allows us to draw on everything we have within ourselves, but also makes us realise what’s missing and what we still have to learn.”
