Music of the Spheres: Georgijs Osokins Announces His Second DG Album – Constellations

Constellations shines a light on the astro-music of Estonian composer Urmas Sisask, offering a selection of pieces, including the world premiere recording of “Cassiopeia. Ballade”
The album also presents works by J.S. Bach, Brahms, Chopin, Crumb, Medtner, Schumann, Scriabin and Wagner
The album will be released on 6 November 2026
“I have always been fascinated by the mystery of the universe – that starry sky above us, a beauty that persists even beyond the event horizon”
Georgijs Osokins
Latvian pianist Georgijs Osokins has recorded his second solo album for Deutsche Grammophon. Inspired by the enduring and mysterious nature of starlight, Constellations presents a beautifully structured narrative that runs from nightfall to daybreak. Its programme places masterpieces by figures such as Chopin, Schumann, Brahms and Wagner in intimate dialogue with lesser-known gems by the Estonian composer and amateur astronomer Urmas Sisask (1960-2022). In highlighting the latter’s work, Osokins is continuing the mission encapsulated a year ago by his acclaimed DG debut album, For Arvo and showcasing the exceptional but under-celebrated musical heritage of the Baltic region.
“Pärt’s music has to be played without any frills or exaggeration. Georgijs Osokins does just that here, performing with consummate composure and simplicity.” – Kai Luehrs-Kaiser on For Arvo (radio3/rbb)
Constellations will be released as a digital album on 6 November 2026. DG will share three tracks before then, starting with Schumann’s Abendlied (arr. Saint-Saëns) on 25 September. This will be followed by Bach’s Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ (arr. Busoni) on 9 October and Brahms’s Lerchengesang (arr. Osokins) on 23 October, and all three will be accompanied by videos.
Georgijs Osokins has long had an interest in the myths and science of the stars in our night sky. “Perhaps stars are the most poetic expression of time itself,” he says. “We continue to see their light long after some of them have ceased to exist: an astrophysical metaphor for life’s enduring legacy, a beauty that transcends time and unites us all.”
This fascination lies behind his new album, on which, as darkness falls, Osokins navigates from one group of stars to another through a selection of evocative solo piano pieces by Sisask named after constellations (“Merope”, “Little Bear”, “Puppis” and so on). The latter’s celestial observations not only provided thematic inspiration for his work, but led him to create his own compositional language, with much of his “astro-music” based on a five-pitch scale derived from his analysis of planetary rotations.
Osokins says he was “profoundly moved” when he discovered this little-known repertoire. “Sisask devoted his artistic life to capturing the spirit of distant star systems humanity may never reach,” he explains. “Through his extraordinary imagination and deep passion, he transformed their silent radiance into music, allowing their celestial light to resonate in sound.”
Constellations presents the world premiere recording of No. 1 from Sisask’s Starry Sky Cycle No. 5 “Northern Polar Sky”: “Cassiopeia. Ballade”. It also features excerpts from Starry Sky Cycles No. 1 “Northern Sky”, No. 2 “Southern Sky” and No. 4 “Equatorial Sky” – including Osokins’ own improvisation on “Antlia: Increasing the Power” – as well as from The Hexagon of the Sky. The Seagull and the Water.
The artist expands on the themes of “transcendence, remembrance and the mystery of existence” embraced by Sisask by interweaving these pieces with works such as “Dream Images”, from Crumb’s zodiac-influenced Makrokosmos I; Busoni’s arrangement of the Bach chorale-prelude Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ; Scriabin’s Vers la flamme; Wagner’s Isoldens Liebestod (arr. Liszt/Osokins); and, offering a first glimpse of daylight, Osokins’ arrangement of Brahms’s Lerchengesang, a song that celebrates the “skylarks’ heavenly greetings”.
Having opened with Saint-Saëns’s arrangement of the song Abendlied (“Darkness sinks powerfully into the depths … The stars now dwell with majesty in the celestial sphere”), the album closes with another work by Schumann – the first movement of his late, luminous piano cycle Gesänge der Frühe (Songs of Dawn). “Schumann’s music forms the arch of the album,” says Osokins, “opening the journey in the stillness of night beneath newborn stars and bringing it to its close at daybreak, with the first distant song of solitary birds.”

An Impromptu Arvo Pärt Duet: Martha Argerich and Georgijs Osokins Record Hymn to a Great City

Captured straight after a live performance, the recording marks Argerich’s first foray into Pärt’s soundworld
Out as a digital single on 10 October 2025, this brand-new track follows the release of Osokins’ debut DG album For Arvo in September

“Not only is Arvo Pärt’s music beautiful, every note has a meaning”
Georgijs Osokins
Recent Deutsche Grammophon signing Georgijs Osokins is to release a digital single with the legendary Martha Argerich. The artists have joined forces to make a rare recording of Arvo Pärt’s Hymn to a Great City for two pianos – a musical gift for the venerable Estonian composer. Available to stream or download from 10 October 2025, the track is a follow-up to Osokins’ critically acclaimed debut DG album, For Arvo, released on 11 September, Pärt’s 90th birthday. The vinyl version of the album (2 LPs) comes out on 21 November.
The single was recorded in a spontaneous late-night session at Hamburg’s Laeiszhalle in June. During that evening’s concert, part of the city’s annual Martha Argerich Festival, Osokins played a selection of solo pieces by Pärt, and Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Trio with Gidon Kremer and Giedrė Dirvanauskaitė. Having never performed any of Pärt’s music before, Argerich came up with the idea of recording Hymn to a Great City with Georgijs, thereby both paying homage to a great composer and making a generous gesture to her younger colleague, who is already renowned for his insight into Pärt’s soundworld.
The Latvian pianist has described his DG debut as “a declaration of my love for Arvo and his music”. Produced in cooperation with Wintour Group, the album features Pärt’s complete solo piano works as well as several creative and idiomatic transcriptions of works for other instruments realised by Osokins himself. It includes the composer’s earliest solo piano pieces, Sonatinas Nos. 1 and 2 (1958/9) and Partita (1958), as well as the very first tintinnabuli work, Für Alina (1976). The new transcriptions include Fratres (1977, without fixed instrumentation) and Fragile e conciliante from Lamentate (2002, piano & orchestra).
“Osokins creates small-scale narratives from Pärt’s minimalist style. Shimmering patterns and colours emerge, combining to form tranquil soundscapes.” – Concerti on For Arvo
Osokins also marked the composer’s 90th birthday by giving a recital at the Arvo Pärt Centre, in the composer’s home town of Laulasmaa, as part of this year’s Nargen Festival. Filmed live on 5 September, this very special concert includes music by Bach, Scarlatti and Schubert, as well as Pärt, and is available to stream now on STAGE+.
Georgijs will perform repertoire from For Arvo on tour this autumn, with dates in Latvia – Liepāja, Cēsis, Ventspils and Riga (4, 5, 9 & 14 October) – as well as in Helsinki (12 October), Munich (20 November) and Berlin (22 November). He also appears at New York’s Carnegie Hall on 4 December with Kremer and Dirvanauskaitė, playing works by Pärt, Kancheli and Rachmaninoff. Deutsche Grammophon recently announced a new and exclusive collaboration with Georgijs Osokins. A proud advocate of the rarely celebrated musical heritage of the Baltic states, the Latvian-born pianist will open his DG career with an album of works by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, who turns 90 this year. Osokins has recorded Pärt’s complete solo piano works and realised his own creative and idiomatic transcriptions of several other famous pieces, including Fratres. These reflect both his musical integrity and his profound level of engagement with Pärt’s work.
For Arvo will be released in all formats on 5 September 2025 to coincide with the composer’s 90th birthday on 11 September. Für Alina is available digitally from 23 May. It will be followed on 4 July by Mommy’s Kiss and on 1 August by Osokins’ transcription of Lamentate: Fragile e conciliante.
Relishing the role of musical archaeologist, Georgijs Osokins loves exploring new areas of the literature and unearthing hidden treasures for his instrument. He is also a skilled arranger and transcriber, often incorporating reimagined works into his programmes. His aim with For Arvo is to introduce Pärt’s music to younger generations and, through his own new transcriptions for solo piano, to shed new light on some of the composer’s best-loved works and some lesser-known gems.
The album reflects Pärt’s compositional evolution from avant-garde complexity to his unique and groundbreaking tintinnabuli (“little bells”) idiom. The result of a period of introspection in the early 1970s, this style combines elements of Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony with minimalism, resulting in music that is striking for both its simplicity and its emotional and spiritual intensity.
For Arvo includes Pärt’s earliest solo piano pieces, Sonatinas Nos. 1 and 2 (1958/9) and Partita (1958), as well as his very first tintinnabuli work, Für Alina (1976). The new transcriptions by Osokins include Fratres (1977, without fixed instrumentation) and Fragile e conciliante from Lamentate (2002, piano & orchestra).
The pianist has also taken advantage of the possibilities offered by the recording studio to present a fresh perspective on Pari intervallo (1976, written in four parts, without fixed instrumentation) and on Hymn to a Great City (1984, for two pianos). Osokins plays a 100-year-old Blue Steinway piano –courtesy of the Symphoniker Hamburg – an instrument whose unique sound helped him capture and convey the distinctive sonorities of Pärt’s music.
In preparing for the recording, Osokins was able to learn both from his mentor Gidon Kremer, a renowned Pärt specialist, and from the composer himself and those close to him. “In Georgijs,” says Kremer, “I see not just a remarkable pianist, but a true kindred spirit, someone deeply attuned to the spiritual core of Arvo’s music, and capable of carrying that voice forward for generations to come.”
“The opportunity to be in contact with Arvo and Nora Pärt and the team at the Arvo Pärt Centre in Laulasmaa over the years was invaluable,” adds Osokins. “Their generously shared insights deeply enriched the artistic result.” The For Arvo project has also partnered with Wintour Group International, which promotes unique cultural initiatives across the Baltic region and beyond, collaborating with some of the world’s most outstanding musicians and ensembles.

Berlin, 9 May 2025. Deutsche Grammophon has embarked on an exclusive collaboration with Latvian pianist Georgijs Osokins, who brings a distinctive approach to both the classical repertoire and the musical heritage of the Baltic region. Known for his archaeological explorations of lesser-known piano literature and his collaborations with his compatriot and mentor Gidon Kremer, Osokins creates thoughtfully structured programmes that often feature his own transcriptions and arrangements. His performances of everything from Bach to Pärt have earned him critical recognition. Audiences can experience his artistry next week in Berlin (12 May) and at the Ruhr Klavier Festival (16 May), with further international concerts to follow.
Osokins begins his DG collaboration with an album of works by Arvo Pärt entitled For Arvo, in tribute to the composer’s 90th birthday. His aim is to introduce the Estonian’s music to younger listeners and offer a new perspective on some of Pärt’s best-loved works.
“Georgijs Osokins brings a rare combination of technical precision, sensual sound and interpretative depth that immediately captured our attention,” says Dr Clemens Trautmann, President Deutsche Grammophon and New Business Strategy. “His approach to Pärt’s work reveals often overlooked layers, finding the emotional core beneath apparent simplicity. He navigates between the Baltic musical tradition and the broader classical canon with impressive ease. Deutsche Grammophon is genuinely excited to embark on this collaboration and to offer unique and rarely performed repertoire to a global audience.”
“It is an overwhelming joy to call Deutsche Grammophon my artistic home,” says Georgijs Osokins. “And it is a profound honour to begin our voyage with the music of Arvo Pärt, whose immense power and enigmatic beauty have long healed and lit the path for countless souls, my own among them. Amid current global upheavals, his music illuminates the human unity we often forget.”
For Arvo will be released in all formats on 5 September 2025 to coincide with the composer’s 90th birthday on 11 September. A first single from the album, Variations for the Healing of Arinushka, is available digitally from today, 9 May.
“I’ve long been an admirer of Arvo’s world,” says Osokins. “And I’ve had the chance to explore many of his works with Gidon Kremer, who was the first to illuminate Pärt’s music on a global scale.” His chosen programme reflects the evolution of Pärt’s personal musical idiom – from avant-garde complexity to the beauty and simplicity of the tintinnabuli style. Adding to the special atmosphere is the unique sound of the 100-year-old Blue Steinway piano played by Osokins (and provided courtesy of the Symphoniker Hamburg). The project has also received support from Wintour Group International, which promotes unique cultural initiatives across the Baltic region
Georgijs Osokins was born into a family of pianists in Riga in 1995. After initial lessons with his father Sergejs Osokins at Riga’s Emīls Dārziņš Music School, he studied at the Juilliard School in New York, and the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf. He is in close contact with such leading artists as Gidon Kremer, Daniel Barenboim and Christoph Eschenbach, whose advice and opinions have helped shape his musicianship.
He gained international recognition at 19 as a finalist in the 2015 Chopin Competition, leading to performances at Berlin’s Konzerthaus, Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie and Tokyo’s Metropolitan Theatre Hall. In 2019, he became a permanent guest artist with Kremerata Baltica. His honours include Poland’s Cross of Merit (silver) and Latvia’s Grand Music Award, whose previous recipients include Elīna Garanča, Mariss Jansons, Gidon Kremer and Andris Nelsons.
