'Legacy' brings together John Williams’s most famous film scores

Released on 4 September 2026, Legacy is a comprehensive musical retrospective of John Williams. The album brings together some of the most famous themes by the award-winning composer and conductor, from the vast reaches of the Star Wars universe and the magical world of Harry Potter to the adventures of Indiana Jones.
What makes the album special is that John Williams is heard not only as a composer, but also conducting his own works. The recordings were made with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Recording Arts Orchestra of Los Angeles. The release thus combines world-famous melodies with the distinctive sounds of three outstanding orchestras.

A musical journey through the world of cinema

Legacy offers a multifaceted portrait of John Williams as one of the most influential film composers of his generation. The album comprises 15 pieces from different stages of his long career, showcasing the remarkable stylistic range of his music.
The album opens with the “Main Title” from Star Wars: A New Hope, whose distinctive fanfare has been one of the best-known openings in film history for decades. The Star Wars saga is also represented by “Yoda’s Theme”, “The Imperial March”, “Princess Leia’s Theme” and “Throne Room & Finale”. Together, these compositions demonstrate how Williams uses unmistakable musical motifs to characterise individual figures, places and conflicts.
With “Hedwig’s Theme” and “Harry’s Wondrous World”, the album also explores the music for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. While the famous celesta melody of “Hedwig’s Theme” creates an atmosphere of mystery, “Harry’s Wondrous World” reveals the colourful and celebratory side of the wizarding world. Other highlights include the powerful “Raiders March” from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, the sweeping theme from Jurassic Park and the weightless-sounding “Flying Theme” from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
The selection is not limited to adventure and fantasy films, however. With the understated “Theme from Schindler’s List”, Legacy also reveals the quieter, deeply emotional side of John Williams. The “Superman March”, the “Olympic Fanfare and Theme”, excerpts from Close Encounters of the Third Kind and “The Flight to Neverland” from Hook add further key works to the programme.

John Williams conducts his own compositions

The release gains a special appeal from the close connection between composition and interpretation. John Williams conducts all the recordings featured on the album, bringing his famous film scores to life at first hand.
Under his direction, the distinctive colours of the scores emerge with particular clarity. Bold brass fanfares, sweeping string melodies and finely balanced orchestral textures combine to create the unmistakable sound that has defined his music for decades.
For these recordings, Williams worked with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Recording Arts Orchestra of Los Angeles. Each ensemble brings its own sound tradition and musical character to these familiar works.
Even without the accompanying film images, the compositions make a powerful impression. Memorable leitmotifs, rhythmic energy and expansive melodic arcs allow the pieces to stand as symphonic works in their own right.

Legacy is available on CD and in two vinyl editions

The John Williams album is available in three editions: a compact CD version and two double-LP editions.
The 1CD Digipack Edition contains the complete programme of all 15 pieces, offering a direct introduction to this musical retrospective. All three editions are accompanied by liner notes by the renowned American journalist and film music expert Jon Burlingame. His commentary provides additional background on the works featured and reinforces Legacy’s character as a comprehensive retrospective of John Williams’s career.

John Williams
In recent years, Deutsche Grammophon has captured a series of very special concerts at which the legendary John Williams has conducted selections of his own music with some of the world’s greatest orchestras. The Yellow Label is now issuing a unique collection of its recordings with the Hollywood icon as a limited-edition 7-LP set. John Williams in Concert brings together performances of film music from the Saito Kinen Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker and Wiener Philharmoniker, as well as the world premiere recording of Williams’s Second Violin Concerto, with soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO).
John Williams in Concert is out now. Stylishly designed, the set includes a booklet featuring the original album liner notes; a new essay about Williams by renowned film-music writer Jon Burlingame; recollections from Williams himself, Anne-Sophie Mutter and some of the other musicians involved in these recordings; and a selection of concert and portrait photos.
On the same day as the album, DG is also releasing a 12-inch picture disc single in the shape of Darth Vader’s helmet presenting four different recordings of the “Imperial March” from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (one by each orchestra appearing in the vinyl collection). Previously unreleased in any format, the BSO version additionally receives its first digital release. The release of John Williams in Concert coincides with the much-anticipated Music by John Williams, an all-new documentary on the life and career of the legendary composer, directed by Laurent Bouzereau and currently streaming on Disney+.

It was in January 2020 that John Williams made his hugely anticipated conducting debut with the Wiener Philharmoniker at the Vienna Musikverein. The recording of The Vienna Concert (LPs 5 & 6) became the best-selling orchestral album of the year, topping the classical charts in the US, the UK, Japan and Australia and hitting the Top 10 of the pop charts in Germany, Austria and Japan. The conductor and orchestra were joined by violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter to perform new arrangements of some of Williams’ iconic film themes, including “Hedwig’s Theme” from the Harry Potter franchise.
“an unforgettable concert, characterized by great artistic and human appreciation, and indeed mutual friendship” – Prof. Daniel Froschauer, chair of the Wiener Philharmoniker
Following his success in Vienna, John Williams made another historic debut in autumn 2021, this time taking the helm of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Together they took another journey through some of his most magical movie scores, including excerpts from Far and Away, Jurassic Park and Superman, among many more. They also performed the Olympic Fanfare and Theme and the less familiar Elegy for cello and orchestra, giving a glimpse into Williams’ work away from the cinema. The Berlin Concert (LPs 3 & 4) was released in February 2022 to coincide with the composer’s 90th birthday.
“We are thankful to have had the chance to perform with John, the ‘Superman’ of music himself” – Olaf Maninger, co-chair of the Berliner Philharmoniker
Williams was reunited in the summer of 2021 with Anne-Sophie Mutter at Tanglewood, the BSO’s summer home, where they gave the world premiere of his Violin Concerto No. 2, written expressly for Mutter. Later that year they recorded the concerto at Boston’s Symphony Hall. The Boston Concert (LP 2) presents that version, which met with critical acclaim: “Don’t expect Williams, the master of movie magic and purveyor of luscious themes, simply to tender more of the same in these concertos. What he offers here is way more complex, way thornier … [The music] is infectious by virtue of its creative energy, the sparks of interaction generated between player and composer” (Gramophone).
“John has enriched my life immensely and has inspired me for decades. May the force, endless joy, inspiration and his magical powers always be with him!” – Anne-Sophie Mutter
The most recent concert included here took place last September, by which time Williams was a youthful 91. It was a uniquely special moment – he was back in Japan, for the first time in 30 years, to work with the Saito Kinen Orchestra at the invitation of his old friend Seiji Ozawa. Sadly, it proved to be the last concert Ozawa attended before his death in February this year. The Tokyo Concert (LPs 1) was also a gala event, co-conducted by Stéphane Denève, to mark DG’s 125th anniversary. Williams took the helm for a wide-ranging selection from his soundtracks to such classics as Superman, Schindler’s List and three of the Star Wars movies, among others.
“John Williams … celebrated his lifetime friendship with Seiji Ozawa, as well as his affection for the Japanese audiences, in a profoundly moving and generous way” – Stéphane Denève
There are further treats to be found on Encores (LP 7), including three of Williams’ film-theme arrangements for Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Sound the Bells!, composed in 1993 to celebrate the marriage of the now Emperor of Japan and premiered by Williams and the Boston Pops Orchestra on their Japanese tour that year. Through this rich variety of music, John Williams in Concert therefore not only immortalises the collaborations with four exceptional orchestras but, to quote Jon Burlingame, reminds us of John Williams’ importance in “the soundtrack of all of our lives”.

John Williams in Tokyo

30 years after his last visit to Japan, John Williams returned for two special concerts – one in Matsumoto and one in Tokyo – marking his debut with the world-famous Saito Kinen Orchestra, with selections from his beloved film scores, and reuniting with his longtime friend, world-renowned conductor Seiji Ozawa. The second of these concerts was captured live on record at Suntory Hall last year and the resulting recording, John Williams In Tokyo, is set to be released on 3 May, following his acclaimed concert albums, The Berlin Concert and John Williams in Vienna, which topped charts around the globe. The first single, ‘Superman March’ is out now along with a music video of the performance. The digital album is available for pre-order from today, with details of the physical editions to follow – including a deluxe limited edition vinyl box set to include Williams’ recordings from Vienna, Berlin, Boston and Tokyo for release later in the year.
It was a long-held dream of Seiji Ozawa’s to see John Williams and the Saito Kinen Orchestra perform together in Japan, so the performances – and their reunion last year – held great meaning for both artists. Months in the planning, the announcement of this live recording was originally scheduled for the week of John Williams’ birthday (8 February). However, following the news of Seiji Ozawa ‘s passing, it was decided to announce the recording today after close discussion with his family and management.
Williams was invited to Japan by his good friend Ozawa to conduct the Saito Kinen Orchestra – Ozawa’s “musical family” – so the realisation of the two concerts in Matsumoto and Tokyo was a landmark moment – not only for the pair, but for music fans around the world. Ozawa said of the occasion: “This special collaboration between them in Matsumoto and Tokyo was a joy that genuinely defies expression – my longstanding dream has finally come true!” The feeling was reciprocated by John Williams: “It was a joy to return to Japan after 30 years to visit my dear friend and longtime musical colleague Seiji Ozawa and to conduct his brilliant Saito Kinen Orchestra for the very first time.”
Williams was a close friend of Ozawa ever since the latter was Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and took part in the Tanglewood Music Festival in western Massachusetts. As Ozawa recounted in January of this year, “I've consistently encouraged John to experience the unique essence of the Saito Kinen Orchestra, confident that he would love it”. Ozawa was in Matsumoto to witness the concert and was delighted to be reunited with his friend.
The concerts took place in September 2023, following Williams’ recent performances with the Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Recording Arts Orchestra of Los Angeles. He conducted the Saito Kinen Orchestra at the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival, a music festival directed by Seiji Ozawa, and a gala concert at Suntory Hall in Tokyo celebrating the 125th anniversary of Deutsche Grammophon. Both concerts had sold out in minutes.
The long-awaited collaboration consisted of an all-Williams programme, including ‘Superman March’, ‘Theme from Schindler's List’ and ‘The Imperial March’ from Star Wars. For both concerts, John Williams shared the podium with acclaimed conductor and friend, Stéphane Denève – Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Artistic Director of the New World Symphony, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic.
After the first half of the programme (conducted by Denève), Williams appeared on the Tokyo stage and introduced his ‘Superman March’ in honour of Ozawa. He said, “If you translate ‘Superman’ from English back into Japanese, ‘Superman’ means Seiji Ozawa.” The audience was moved by his words indicating their deep friendship and the Saito Kinen Orchestra responded to their enthusiasm with a riveting performance.
Captured live at the concert in Tokyo, the long-awaited release of this musical celebration of friendship is planned for 3 May, the day before so-called Star Wars Day (‘May the Fourth’). The album includes 11 pieces conducted by Williams and a bonus track, ‘Tributes! (for Seiji), conducted by Denève. The work was composed by Williams in 1999 to honour Ozawa’s 25th anniversary as Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and is now being released for the first time worldwide.
Later in the year, Deutsche Grammophon will continue to celebrate the art of John Williams with the release of John Williams in Concert, a deluxe and very limited 7LP vinyl box set featuring his latest DG recordings alongside exclusive fan content. The release, available to pre-order on 4 May, will include his historic Vienna, Berlin and Boston concerts as well as the newest addition, John Williams in Tokyo. Parallel to this release, a week-long John Williams celebration will take over STAGE+ featuring selected concerts, both new and from the archive.
For more than half a century, John Williams has shaped the history and sound of film music, his instantly memorable themes and consummate orchestrations gracing some of the finest movies of modern times. His extensive catalogue also includes other symphonic and chamber works, as well as innovative adaptations of his own cinematic themes.

World Premiere Recording of 'Violin Concerto No. 2': John Williams And Anne-Sophie Mutter Reunite

Following the huge success of John Williams – The Berlin Concert, which topped the German pop charts earlier this year, Deutsche Grammophon is now proud to present the world premiere recording of John Williams’ Violin Concerto No. 2. The work was written for and recorded by the venerated composer’s friend and frequent collaborator Anne-Sophie Mutter. Her impassioned performance was given with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Williams, who celebrated his 90th birthday on 8 February.
The new album also includes three film themes newly arranged for the violinist by their composer – the Theme from The Long Goodbye, “Han Solo and the Princess” from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and “Marion’s Theme” from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Williams: Violin Concerto No. 2 & Selected Film Themes is out now on CD, Vinyl and digitally. Blu-ray and eVideo formats will be released on 19 August, together with an exclusive 10-inch Vinyl available on the DG Store.
Williams and Mutter have worked together often since she gave the first performance of his Markings in Boston almost five years ago, and have co-starred on two previous hugely successful Deutsche Grammophon albums: Across the Stars (2019) and John Williams in Vienna (2020). Williams’ second violin concerto reflects his deep admiration for the lyrical warmth and dynamism of Mutter’s playing and for her sense of musical adventure.
John Williams recalls: “When Anne-Sophie invited me to compose a concerto for her, I thought it was a wonderful opportunity to write for one of the world’s greatest artists. It was also a challenge, of course, because there are so many great violin concertos in the repertoire.”
Scheduled for release on 19 August, a special single-disc Blu-ray edition of the album will feature all tracks in Pure Audio – also available in Surround and Dolby Atmos – along with films of last summer’s world premiere of the second violin concerto at Tanglewood, together with the artists’ encore performance of “Across the Stars” (from Star Wars: Attack of the Clones); the three film themes in concert from Boston; and a 25‑minute interview with John Williams and Anne-Sophie Mutter at Tanglewood. A 10-inch vinyl version of the three film themes will be released on the same day, available exclusively online from the DG Store.
Full of stylistic contrast, Williams’ Violin Concerto No. 2 begins with the rhapsodic “Prologue”. This is followed by the atmospheric, Debussyesque “Rounds”, and then by the tense, jazzy “Dactyls”, which includes a brief cadenza for violin, harp and timpani. Violin and harp duet again in the “Epilogue”, which concludes the work with what the composer describes as “a gentle resolution in A major that might suggest both healing and renewal”.
“I knew from the recording we made together for DG of my theme from Cinderella Liberty of her remarkable feeling for jazz,” Williams adds. “So I wrote a quasi-improvisation for solo violin at the start of the concerto’s ‘Prologue’ and she was completely at home with it. I can only think of this piece as being about Anne-Sophie. This is a truly personal album for me, because of the rapport I have with her and because of my long relationship with the wonderful musicians of the Boston Symphony.”
“The idea for the piece formed when we worked together on Markings,” says Mutter. “I had no idea then that it would grow into such a gigantic composition, so rich in material and with such enormous emotional and expressive scope. I’ve always loved jazz, so it was a particular joy to discover that the violin’s first entry has the freedom of jazz. It’s the ‘stem cell’ of the whole piece, a terrific starting point for such a complex work. I was overwhelmed by the piece and its technical difficulties at first. But it became a very dear friend as I worked on it every day during lockdown. It was precious to have time to explore this incredible music in depth and feel part of the creative process, to speak to John as he composed and revised the score and discover just how much he loves violin.”
Mutter and Williams gave the world premiere of the concerto on 24 July 2021 at the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer home in Tanglewood. “Mutter carried the solo like an old friend, shaping each phrase with intention and panache,” observed the Boston Globe. The musicians all reconvened in the autumn to record the concerto and the three film themes at Boston’s Symphony Hall.
Back in March, violinist and composer gave the European premiere of the concerto in Vienna with the Wiener Philharmoniker, where in a private ceremony both artists were presented with a Gold Disc in recognition of the success of John Williams in Vienna. This month Mutter joins the all-star line-up (with Yo-Yo Ma and Steven Spielberg, among others) at Washington’s Kennedy Center on 23 June for John Williams: The 90th-Birthday Gala Concert. Tanglewood will host its own birthday event on 20 August, with special guests including Yo-Yo Ma, James Taylor and Branford Marsalis. These and the many other celebrations marking Williams’ 90th birthday year are evidence of the enormous affection and admiration felt worldwide for a composer and conductor who has been delighting audiences for well over six decades with magical film soundtracks and dazzling concert works such as his Violin Concerto No. 2.

John Williams & the Wiener Philharmoniker Celebrate Star Wars Day With a Gold Record

Berlin, 4 May 2022. On Star Wars Day in the Hollywood legend’s 90th-birthday year, Deutsche Grammophon is delighted to announce that John Williams in Vienna has gone gold in Germany. John Williams, Anne-Sophie Mutter and Daniel Froschauer, chairman of the Wiener Philharmoniker, were presented with their gold discs at a private ceremony in March, when conductor, soloist and orchestra were reunited at the Vienna Musikverein for the European premiere of Williams’ Violin Concerto No. 2, written especially for the world-renowned violinist.
John Williams notes, “I’m very grateful to Deutsche Grammophon for celebrating the success of this very special album which I was so pleased to record with Anne-Sophie Mutter and the magnificent Wiener Philharmoniker in 2020. It truly was the experience of a lifetime.”
“We couldn’t be happier about this latest milestone,” adds Dr Clemens Trautmann, President Deutsche Grammophon. “John Williams’ debut in Vienna was a hugely memorable occasion and I’m delighted that we were able to present him with the gold disc during this momentous birthday year and, at the same time, honour Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Wiener Philharmoniker for their extraordinary musical achievement. Having defined the sound of film music for more than half a century, John recently followed up the global success of the Vienna concert with The Berlin Concert, which topped the album charts here in Germany. We feel privileged to be working in partnership with him to release not only his magical film music but also ambitious contemporary works such as his new Violin Concerto, which is dedicated to Anne-Sophie.”
It was in January 2020 that the legendary film composer made his historic conducting debut with the Wiener Philharmoniker. Their two concerts at the Musikverein showcased a wide-ranging selection of classic Williams soundtrack scores, with Anne-Sophie Mutter performing a series of virtuosic adaptations written specially for her by the composer, including “Hedwig’s Theme” from the Harry Potter films, “Devil’s Dance” from The Witches of Eastwick and the Theme from Sabrina. Also on the programme were extracts from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, the Star Wars films, and other timeless hits from Williams’ multi-award-winning catalogue.
Deutsche Grammophon was there to capture every note, and John Williams in Vienna was released in August 2020 to rave reviews and a long list of international Top 10 chart places. It went on to become the best-selling orchestral album of 2020. An extended live edition was released in February 2021 to mark Williams’ 89th birthday. Issued digitally and on CD, vinyl and Blu-ray, it features six bonus tracks and Williams’ own on-stage commentary about each of his iconic soundtracks. Both editions are also available in an immersive Dolby Atmos surround sound mix.
The birthday celebrations continue later this year with the release on 3 June of the world premiere recording of Williams’ Violin Concerto No. 2, performed by Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the composer. The album also includes three more film themes newly arranged for the violinist by Williams: the Theme from The Long Goodbye, “Han Solo and the Princess” from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and “Marion’s Theme” from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

John Williams – The Berlin Concert opens with the Olympic Fanfare and Theme, written for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. It represents what Williams has described as “the spirit of cooperation, of heroic achievement, and all the striving and preparation of our great athletes”.
That spirit flows throughout his Berlin concert, magnified by stunning performances of the “Superman March”, the Theme from Jurassic Park, and a generous selection of excerpts from Close Encounters of the Third Kind and the Star Wars, Harry Potter and Indiana Jones films. The tracklist also features a dazzling trio of encores including “The Flying Theme” from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and “The Imperial March” from Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.

John Williams in Vienna: 2020’s best-selling orchestral album is released as new double-album fan edition

John Williams in Vienna, the legendary composer’s chart-topping new album with the world-famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, has become the best-selling orchestral album of 2020. Now, a brand-new Live Edition, the 2CD Live Edition and the Blu-Ray Edition is released today, 5 February 2021 on DG.
The album has earned over 150 million streams and 100,000 sales since its release in August. In addition to the album’s success, John Williams has enjoyed several career highlights this year. He was awarded Spain’s Premio Princesa de Asturias de las Artes 2020 and the Record Academy Project Award from Japan’s Record Geijutsu magazine, as well as the coveted Royal Philharmonic Society Gold Medal, whose past recipients include Brahms, Elgar, Rachmaninov, Sibelius and Stravinsky. He received the honour from his good friend, film director Steven Spielberg (watch here). Williams also earned his 72nd GRAMMY nomination last month for his latest Star Wars soundtrack, having already won 25 of the prestigious awards.
Speaking about the album’s success, John Williams said: “I feel enormously gratified by the reception that this special concert recording has received. Performing my music with the brilliant Vienna Philharmonic truly was the dream of a lifetime, and the opportunity to share this experience with so many people through Deutsche Grammophon’s outstanding recording has been a particular joy for me.”
“At different points in its history the Vienna Philharmonic has been conducted by the most important composers of the day,” notes Michael Bladerer, CEO of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. “As one of the leading composers of our time, John Williams has continued this tradition and I’m very happy that his extraordinary concert will live on thanks to the recording made last January.”
Dr Clemens Trautmann, President of Deutsche Grammophon, adds, “Millions have grown up with the soundtracks of John Williams. We’ve been thrilled and enchanted by his music and moved by his extraordinary gift for writing melodies that stay with us forever. I’m delighted by the response to John Williams in Vienna and by the deep rapport that he, Anne-Sophie Mutter and the musicians of the Vienna Philharmonic developed. The new Live Edition captures even more of the special energy of their relationship and the magic they created together at the Musikverein.”
As well as containing the complete concert performance given by Williams and the orchestra in January 2020, the Live Edition also includes six bonus tracks, featuring a selection of his new arrangements of some of his most iconic movie themes for violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, together with his on-stage commentary about each of the soundtrack scores in his Vienna programme.
The chart-topping album, John Williams in Vienna, captures a moment of musical history: his conducting debut with the internationally-renowned orchestra, just weeks before his 88th birthday. Taking to the podium in the stunning Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein, Williams conducted a variety of pieces from his remarkable 60-year career, including ‘Imperial March’ from Star Wars, ‘The Flight To Neverland’ from Hook, the suite from Jaws and excerpts from Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. The recording propelled John Williams into the Top 10 of the pop charts in Germany, Austria and Japan, and topped the classical charts in the US, the UK, Japan and Australia. It also gave the composer his highest ever chart entry in Germany and became his best-selling album of recent years.
Critics have been united in their acclaim for John Williams in Vienna. “The music swoons, marches and goes to war with Williams’s usual combination of sparkling swagger and lyrical finesse,” observed The Times (London) in its review. “Just close your eyes and dream.”

Greeted on stage at the Musikverein with a standing ovation before a single note had been played John Williams described the chance to work with the Wiener Philharmoniker as “one of the greatest honours of my life". During the concert Williams was joined on the Musikverein stage by Anne-Sophie Mutter to perform a series of virtuosic adaptations written specially for her by Williams, including “Hedwig’s Theme” from the Harry Potter films, “Devil’s Dance” from The Witches of Eastwick and the Theme from Sabrina.
“Anne-Sophie Mutter is many things,” Williams said, as he introduced her. “She is one of the world’s greatest violinists; she is a wonderful mother; she brings honour to her country. And in going to Australia, Asia, South America, North America, Europe, she’s indeed a very great world citizen.”

John Williams commented: “Performing at such a prestigious venue as the Musikverein with the magnificent Wiener Philharmoniker and the incomparable Anne-Sophie Mutter was a very great privilege indeed. I’m delighted that listeners will be able to share that experience through the special technology of Dolby Atmos.”
Clemens Trautmann, President, Deutsche Grammophon said: “As the label that was founded by the inventor of the Gramophone, Deutsche Grammophon has always embraced technological innovation. Building on the long tradition of our engineers, who produced multi-track and quadrophonic recordings in the 1970s and 1980s, Deutsche Grammophon was the first label to create Dolby Atmos mixes of entire symphony cycles starting in 2017. There are so many wonderful details and spatial effects in classical music that are lost in the standard stereo mix, but which are brought to life through the Dolby Atmos technology, adding another dimension to the listening experience. The ‘John Williams in Vienna’ album is a perfect showcase for that: the world’s most renowned film music composer with one of the top orchestras in the fabled acoustics of Musikverein.”

John Williams has just added to an already incredibly long list of achievements by making his conducting debut with the Wiener Philharmoniker. Their two concerts at Vienna’s Musikverein on 18 and 19 January 2020 – which were also the first performances he had ever conducted in continental Europe – were produced by Deutsche Grammophon in partnership with the Wiener Philharmoniker and ServusTV and filmed by Bernhard Fleischer Moving Images (BFMI). John Williams in Vienna is now set for international release by the Yellow Label on 14 August 2020 and will be available on all relevant physical and digital mediums, including Blu‑ray, CD, vinyl and eVideo, in both stereo and Dolby Atmos surround mixes. The film will be broadcast in Germany, Austria and Switzerland by ServusTV on Whit Monday 1 June 2020 at 10am and 10.15pm.
Before a single note had been played in the Musikverein, Maestro Williams received a standing ovation. The legendary American composer’s movie soundtracks are among the best-loved of all time and have earned countless prestigious awards, including five Oscars, five Emmys, four Golden Globes and twenty-five Grammys. As he thanked the audience for their welcome, however, he told them that the invitation to work with the Wiener Philharmoniker was “one of the greatest honours of my life”.
Williams and the orchestra were joined on stage for much of the first half by Anne-Sophie Mutter. For conductor and violinist this was a marvellous opportunity to continue an artistic partnership formed last year for Deutsche Grammophon’s album Across the Stars, featuring many new adaptations of the composer’s music for violin and orchestra.
Mutter captivated the Musikverein audience with a series of the virtuosic adaptations written specially for her by Williams, including “Hedwig’s Theme” from the Harry Potter films, “Devil’s Dance” from The Witches of Eastwick and the Theme from Sabrina.
As she said after the first concert, Mutter also took great pleasure in watching the Wiener Philharmoniker bring its inimitable rich sound to some of Williams’ most iconic film themes. “Seeing these seasoned professionals and young members of the orchestra alike joining in such joy in music they have not played often. It’s just wonderful!” Daniel Froschauer, Chairman of the Wiener Philharmoniker, was keen to express the orchestra’s great enthusiasm about the unique opportunity of performing these wonderful compositions under the baton of their creator: “It was a deeply fulfilling artistic exchange.”
John Williams, who celebrated his 88th birthday just a few weeks after the Musikverein concerts, admitted he’d been unsure how the Wiener Philharmoniker would adapt to playing his music. “I couldn’t have been more happily surprised,” he said after their concerts. “I have to compliment the orchestra on their great virtuosity and fantastic ability to perform all styles of music.”
Another happy surprise had come during rehearsals, when the Philharmoniker’s brass players asked him if they could add the “Imperial March” from Star Wars to the programme. Their sensational performance underlined the rapport and affection between orchestra and composer. “It was honestly one of the best presentations of that March I’ve ever heard”, Williams reflected afterwards. “They played it as though they owned it and I felt very grateful to them for giving me a chance to play it at the end of our programme.”
