María Dueñas Presents Halvorsen’s Violin Concerto together with the Orchestre Métropolitain and Yannick Nézet-Séguin

Dueñas’s acclaimed rendition of Halvorsen’s forgotten masterpiece in Sofia Bohdanowicz’s film will now reach an even wider global audience
She is joined in the Violin Concerto and Halvorsen’s Chant de la “Veslemøy” by the Orchestre Métropolitain and Yannick Nézet-Séguin – out on 16 October 2026
The two works also appear on the movie’s soundtrack album, whose original score was composed by Olivier Alary – out on 4 December
“María Dueñas quickly won over her audience with the lyricism of her initial cadenza, which was absolutely sublime”
Bachtrack, on the artists’ performance of Halvorsen’s Concerto in Montreal, November 2023
Deutsche Grammophon is delighted to announce the release of a pair of companion digital albums from María Dueñas. Both are being issued in connection with Measures for a Funeral, the 2024 film in which the violinist made her acting debut. The first album presents her recordings of two works by Norwegian composer Johan Halvorsen (1864-1935), who was himself a virtuoso violinist. Together with the Orchestre Métropolitain and its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Dueñas performs Halvorsen’s long-lost Violin Concerto and Chant de la “Veslemøy”, an excerpt from his Suite Mosaïque. The second album is the original soundtrack to Sofia Bohdanowicz’s film, featuring the two Halvorsen works alongside new music written and performed by Montreal-based French composer Olivier Alary.
Captured live for the film at Montreal’s Maison symphonique in collaboration with DG, the standalone recordings of Halvorsen’s Violin Concerto and Chant de la “Veslemøy” (“Song of the Young Maiden”) will be released on 16 October 2026. Measures for a Funeral – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will follow on 4 December.
An introspective, thought-provoking film about grief and memory, Measures for a Funeral premiered in the Centrepiece programme at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the Grand Prix at Montreal’s Festival du nouveau cinéma. It has now screened at more than 30 festivals internationally and is soon to receive a US theatrical release through acclaimed independent distributor Factory 25. The Globe and Mail hailed it as “a symphony of obsession”, while The Guardian, in a four-star review, said watching it felt like “stepping into an Alfred Hitchcock dream”.
The film’s central figure, Audrey (Deragh Campbell), is a young musicologist researching the (real-life) pioneering Canadian violinist Kathleen Parlow (1890-1963). Director Bohdanowicz, whose own grandfather – violinist Andrew Benac – was taught by Parlow, was also inspired by the story of Halvorsen’s Violin Concerto, Op. 28. Dedicated to and premiered by Parlow in 1909, it met with mixed reviews and its composer ordered all copies to be destroyed. Having acquired a mythical status as a lost masterpiece, the work suddenly resurfaced a decade ago, when librarians Houman Behzadi and James Mason found it at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music Library as part of a large-scale project to digitise Parlow’s archive.
Bohdanowicz’s movie culminates in a performance of the concerto by young violinist Elisa, played with great sensitivity by Dueñas. “When we presented the script to María, she immediately identified with it”, says the film-maker. “I really do feel like she’s sort of a reincarnation of Kathleen Parlow. She is a remarkably skilled musician.”
Dueñas gives a dazzling performance of the concerto, whose use of Norwegian folk idioms and Hardanger fiddle effects adds to its many attractions. She masters its full array of technical demands, intensifying the contrast between its virtuosic episodes and its gently lyrical moments.
Halvorsen’s songlike vein is heard again in Chant de la “Veslemøy”, an exquisite miniature originally for violin and piano but arranged by the composer for Parlow to perform with strings while she was in Norway in 1909. Bachtrack’s critic noted how at the Montreal concert Dueñas and her fellow musicians created “a transcendent experience”, with Nézet-Séguin fostering “an atmosphere in which all the performers were empowered to reach their full expressive potential”.
“It was an honour to help recover Johan Halvorsen’s magnificent Violin Concerto, Op. 28,” says Dueñas, “and to give renewed visibility to Kathleen Parlow, the extraordinary Canadian virtuoso for whom the work was written. Parlow was a celebrated violinist of the early twentieth century, her career unfolding in the same remarkable era as that of Jascha Heifetz, and yet her name has gradually faded from musical memory. Through Measures for a Funeral, I felt privileged not only to convey her artistic legacy, but also to bring her voice, through Halvorsen’s music, to a new generation of listeners. To encounter this long-lost masterpiece and allow it to live again in performance in Canada under the great Canadian maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin was a deeply moving experience: a tribute to Parlow’s artistry, to Halvorsen’s imagination, and to the enduring power of music to restore forgotten lives to our collective memory.”
Acclaimed soundtrack composer Olivier Alary has written a powerful, at times ominous original score for Measures for a Funeral. His music, featuring contributions from violists Victor de Coninck and Pemi Paull, complements the Romantic orchestral pieces and expresses Audrey’s inner world. It follows her as she immerses herself in Parlow’s life and work – an escape from the unresolved tensions in her relationship with her dying mother.
This season, María Dueñas makes her South American debut with concerts in Chile, Argentina and Uruguay, before appearing in Mexico (4-10 October; Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor). Further highlights include a reunion with the Staatskapelle Berlin and Christian Thielemann in Berlin (12/13 January 2027; Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in D minor) and performances of the Barber Violin Concerto with the Wiener Symphoniker and Petr Popelka in Austria and the Canary Islands (15‑24 January). She also appears with the Bamberger Symphoniker under Jakub Hrůša (Bamberg, 5/6 February, and Hamburg, 8 March; Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1), returns to Montreal to rejoin Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Orchestre Métropolitain (21-23 April; Saint-Saëns’s Violin Concerto No. 3), and performs the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Santtu-Matias Rouvali (Munich, 4 May, and London, 6 May). DG recognized with four nominations for the 67th GRAMMY Awards®

Star pianist Víkingur Ólafsson earns a first GRAMMY® nomination for his exceptional interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations

The nominations for the 67th GRAMMY Awards® were announced on 8th November in a special livestream event. Honouring outstanding artistic and technical achievement, the GRAMMY® is the record industry’s highest accolade, and this year, Deutsche Grammophon recordings have received nominations in four leading classical categories.
Pianist Víkingur Ólafsson’s unanimously critically-acclaimed reading of Bach’s Goldberg Variations is nominated for Best Classical Instrumental Solo, just months after he completed his season-long, six‑continent tour of the work.
Meanwhile DG’s world premiere recording of the late Kaija Saariaho’s much-admired second opera, Adriana Mater, is nominated for both Best Opera Recording and Best Contemporary Classical Composition. Directed by Peter Sellars, the opera is performed by the San Francisco Symphony and San Francisco Symphony Chorus, with soloists Fleur Barron, Axelle Fanyo, Nicholas Phan and Christopher Purves, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen.
The fourth nomination is in the Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media (Includes Film and Television) category, and goes to Maestro: Music by Leonard Bernstein, recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the film’s writer, director, producer and star Bradley Cooper.
Finally, there was also a nomination for Producer of the Year for Christoph Franke, whose body of work over the last year includes DG pianist Yuja Wang’s eclectic and virtuosic hit album The Vienna Recital and the Beethoven sonata cycle for violin and piano with Antje Weithaas and Dénes Várjon, a production of the DG-affiliated label CAvi-music.
“It is very humbling and gratifying that Deutsche Grammophon has once again emerged as the classical label with most nominations. Seeing the immense dedication and hard work that goes into our recordings recognised by the Recording Academy means a lot to our artist community, to our respective project partners and to the entire Yellow Label team,” says Dr Clemens Trautmann, President Deutsche Grammophon. “The nominations represent our key areas of focus – exciting new repertoire and world premiere releases such as Saariaho’s Adriana Mater with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the San Francisco Symphony; outstanding production quality, as exemplified by Christoph Franke’s recordings; our desire to reach out to a broader audience, as with Bradley Cooper’s Maestro soundtrack, which celebrates both DG’s past with Leonard Bernstein and its present with Yannick Nézet-Séguin; and – last but not least – groundbreaking new interpretations of iconic works, such as Víkingur Ólafsson’s ‘Goldberg’ cycle. This well-deserved first nomination for Víkingur is particularly heartwarming, as it recognises his absolutely unique take on Bach – one that has moved hundreds of millions of listeners across the globe and drawn remarkable crowds on his international 100-concert tour.”
“I am so honoured and happy to receive my first Grammy nomination!” adds Víkingur Ólafsson. “Thank you so much to all of you who listen to and support my work. And thank you to Johann Sebastian Bach for writing this glorious and incomparable piece of music. The Goldberg Variations will always be the music of the future.”
The 67th GRAMMY Awards® ceremony will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday 2 February 2025. Aired live on the CBS Television Network, it will also be streamed live and on demand on Paramount+.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin & the Chamber Orchestra of Europe Explore Brahms’s Symphonies in Baden-Baden

For over a decade, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE) have been reunited each summer in the German spa town of Baden-Baden. In 2021, their work there led to a well-received complete Beethoven symphony recording for Deutsche Grammophon, the first such cycle to be based on the New Complete Edition of the composer’s works (“Incredible energy emanates from Nézet-Séguin’s conducting … There is a new explosion of vitality every minute, the sense of drive and optimism simply irresistible” – Forum Opéra ).
The following summer, Nézet-Séguin became artistic director of the Festspielhaus’s new La Capitale d’Été festival. Established by the theatre’s general manager, Benedikt Stampa, the festival took its name from a guidebook by French writer Eugène Guinot, which stated that Europe had two capitals – Paris in winter, but Baden-Baden in summer. During their 2022 and 2023 residencies, Nézet-Séguin and the COE turned their attention to Brahms, performing and recording all four of his symphonies. Deutsche Grammophon will release Johannes Brahms: The Symphonies digitally and as a 3-CD set on 12 July 2024. The third movement of Symphony No. 2 is available to stream as of 7 June, with the third movement of No. 3 out on 21 June. Both will be accompanied by performance videos.
The choice of Brahms for the COE’s 2022/23 residencies was particularly apt, given that the composer himself spent several summers in the village of Lichtenthal, just outside Baden-Baden, near the home of his friend Clara Schumann. He worked on many of his best-known compositions during those years, including the first two symphonies. The First had taken him many long years to complete, so haunted was he by the legacy of Beethoven, but the Second flowed more easily from his pen. Because of the latter work’s close links to the area, the festival broadcast a special relay of the COE’s triumphant performance to a screen in the courtyard of the medieval Lichtenthal Abbey.
Perhaps inspired by being able to walk in Brahms’s footsteps in the town and surrounding countryside, the conductor again brought huge vitality to his illuminating readings of all four works, as can be heard in these recordings. He rejuvenates these landmarks of the repertoire, employing faster tempi that in some cases cut several minutes from standard performance times. There is no question of speed for speed’s sake – the choice of tempo is all about enhancing a movement’s emotional impact. The perfect contrast is provided by Nézet-Séguin’s interpretations of the slow movements, notably the Andante of No. 3, in which he seems to conjure an idyllic landscape, as if instilling the music with the “kind of longing” Brahms once said he felt for Baden-Baden.
Johannes Brahms: The Symphonies reflects the close and productive relationship which has developed between Nézet-Séguin and the COE since their first joint project in 2008, and which saw the conductor named an Honorary Member of the orchestra in 2017. The new album is the latest addition to a DG discography that already includes acclaimed recordings of the complete Schumann and Mendelssohn symphonies, as well as the Beethoven cycle; five Mozart operas (Così fan tutte, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Le nozze di Figaro, La clemenza di Tito and Die Zauberflöte), Prokofiev’s Violin Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 and Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20.
Orchestra and conductor will join forces again at the 2024 Capitale d’Été festival, which takes place between 13 and 21 July. Nézet-Séguin conducts a Summer Gala on 16 July, making his live debut at the helm of the London Symphony Orchestra, with whom he recorded the widely praised soundtrack album for Maestro, Bradley Cooper’s Oscar-nominated film about Leonard Bernstein. They will be joined by mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, who will also appear in a “Yannick Nézet-Séguin & Friends” concert, alongside members of the COE (19 July), and in a Mahler programme with the full COE ensemble (20 July). To close the festival, the COE and Nézet-Séguin will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concertos Nos. 4 & 5, with soloist Seong-Jin Cho, and Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony (21 July).

Maestro – The Original Soundtrack Album

Directed, written, produced by, and starring Bradley Cooper in the title role, opposite Carey Mulligan, Maestro is a towering and fearless love story chronicling the lifelong relationship between Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein. A love letter to life and art, Maestro at its core is an emotionally epic portrayal of family and love. Deutsche Grammophon is delighted to be releasing the original soundtrack album for the movie, which has already garnered widespread critical acclaim. All the music in the film was chosen by Cooper, and the new recordings on the soundtrack were made by the London Symphony Orchestra and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who also worked closely with the actor-director as conducting consultant before and throughout the film-making process.
The album will be released digitally on 17 November 2023, and on CD and vinyl on 1 December. A taster track featuring an excerpt from the Finale of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection”, with soprano Rosa Feola, mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, the London Symphony Chorus and the LSO, conducted by Cooper, comes out on 27 October. Maestro is released in cinemas in the US on 22 November, in the UK on 24 November, and in the rest of the world between 1 and 8 December. It will then arrive on Netflix on 20 December.
Maestro’s director and star has been surrounded and captivated by classical music since childhood. “Many an opera and classical album were playing in our house growing up,” recalled Bradley Cooper, who was speaking before the current SAG-AFTRA strike. “I spent hours conducting an imaginary orchestra to the best of my 8-year-old ability. There was one recording of Leonard Bernstein on heavy rotation. So the pilot light I needed to make Maestro turned on many years before I actually came across the project.”
Cooper, who also co-wrote Maestro with Josh Singer, worked closely with Bernstein’s three children, Jamie, Nina and Alexander in preparation for the filming. To make his portrayal of both the man and the artist as authentic as possible, he immersed himself in the classical world, spending hours with the New York Philharmonic and other orchestras, and learning from conductors Michael Tilson Thomas, Gustavo Dudamel and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The latter then assisted Cooper on set, notably on location at Ely Cathedral for a magical re‑enactment of Bernstein’s famous recording of Mahler’s “Resurrection” Symphony. He now hopes the soundtrack will inspire listeners to explore further the output of a man he considers to have been the most influential musician of the 20th century.
“Bernstein, from a very young age and throughout his life, was all about building bridges,” says Yannick Nézet-Séguin. “While his artistic output left him unclassifiable, performing and composing for symphony orchestras, Broadway shows, film, and ballet, he constantly fought society’s urge to categorize him, to pigeonhole him into one genre or another.”
The album reflects that uncategorisable musical character, presenting excerpts from works as varied as West Side Story, Candide, On the Town, Mass, Chichester Psalms and Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3, among others. It also includes music by Beethoven, Mahler, Schumann and Walton, used to illustrate key moments in Bernstein’s career and marriage. It was with Schumann’s “Manfred” Overture, for example, that he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic at the age of just 25, standing in at the last moment for an indisposed Bruno Walter.
Dr Clemens Trautmann, President Deutsche Grammophon welcomes the younger generation’s celebration of this musical polymath. “Reality and fiction merge in Netflix’s Maestro – as do past and present – when we watch Bradley Cooper’s impressive portrayal of legendary Yellow Label artist Leonard Bernstein and listen to Yannick Nézet-Séguin, one of today’s leading conductors and himself an exclusive DG artist, on the official soundtrack, released with the same iconic yellow cartouche on the cover that used to adorn Lenny’s groundbreaking symphonic and opera releases. Yannick has championed Bernstein’s works throughout his career, his recordings including a gripping interpretation of Mass with The Philadelphia Orchestra. In our 125th-anniversary year, we at Deutsche Grammophon feel proud to have helped shape Bernstein’s recorded legacy and to have worked with the visionary Bradley Cooper, who shows us how contemporary – timeless, even – Lenny’s music and life story are. This album reflects our ongoing passion for collaborating with film-makers and bringing the worlds of cinema and classical music together.”
DG is currently reissuing a number of the landmark recordings Bernstein made with the Yellow Label during the last decade or so of his life. Out on 1 December (digitally and on 2 CDs), The Maestro – Very Best of Bernstein is a compilation album offering the perfect introduction to his work, while his iconic recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with the New York Philharmonic is available now on 2 LPs. Bernstein’s readings of Mozart’s Symphonies Nos. 35 “Haffner” and 41 “Jupiter”, Mahler’s Fifth Symphony and the same composer’s Sixth Symphony and Kindertotenlieder will be issued in new Dolby Atmos remastered versions on 3 November, 24 November and 22 December respectively. Finally, the label is releasing a 10‑album Digital Library A–Z presenting Bernstein’s complete recordings for Deutsche Grammophon & Decca. Six albums are already available, and the remaining four will be issued weekly between now and the end of November. Together they encompass over 260 hours of superlative Bernstein recordings.

Remembering Rachmaninoff

Deutsche Grammophon is set to mark the 150th anniversary of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s birth with the release of three essential albums. “Rachmaninoff speaks to listeners as powerfully today as ever,” says Dr Clemens Trautmann, President Deutsche Grammophon. “His music first entered the DG catalogue during his lifetime and – as our anniversary tribute proves – it continues to inspire a remarkable generation of performers today. These wonderful recordings and breathtaking STAGE+ videos offer fresh insights into some of his greatest works.”
To coincide with Rachmaninoff’s birthday on 1 April, STAGE+ is releasing a curated selection of video-on-demand streams – music by the composer performed by exceptional artists such as Yuja Wang, Hélène Grimaud, Lang Lang and Daniil Trifonov.
A special edition of Daniil Trifonov’s award-winning Destination Rachmaninov project, recorded with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and The Philadelphia Orchestra, comes out today (31 March), a day ahead of the celebration. The reissue, comprising 3 CDs and a High-Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-ray disc, includes all four piano concertos and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, along with Trifonov’s solo piano transcriptions of the Vocalise and Silver Sleigh Bells and Rachmaninoff’s own transcription of three movements from Bach’s Partita for solo violin, BWV 1006.
Last month, Yuja Wang performed all five works for piano and orchestra over a series of concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel as part of the orchestra’s Rachmaninoff Festival. “Wang played with exceptional power, depth and dazzle,” noted the Los Angeles Times. “Dudamel went in for illumination. The pianist and conductor have had a long musical relationship, and it showed. What seemed the most impressive was the focus. Once each performance started, all else seemed to fall away.”
The complete live audio and audiovisual recordings captured during these recent landmark concerts will be available in August 2023. The Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini will be available from today (31 March) as an e-single.
Set for release on 30 June, meanwhile, DG’s third Rachmaninoff 150 album sees The Philadelphia Orchestra and Yannick Nézet-Séguin present Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3 and The Isle of the Dead. The 2‑CD release will complete their two-part survey of the three symphonies and other major orchestral works and, like the first instalment of 2021 – an acclaimed recording of Symphony No. 1 and the Symphonic Dances – and their work with Daniil Trifonov, continues to build on the orchestra’s incomparable Rachmaninoff legacy. The Russian pianist-composer made his first appearance as soloist with the Fabulous Philadelphians in 1909; played with and conducted the orchestra many times over the next 34 years; recorded his works for piano and orchestra with it; and wrote his Paganini Rhapsody, Third Symphony and Symphonic Dances with its famously rich sound in mind.
Also marking this year’s anniversary celebrations, on 24 March DG’s sister label Decca re-released Rachmaninov – The Complete Works, a comprehensive 32-CD set featuring benchmark recordings by Martha Argerich, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Nelson Freire, Kirill Kondrashin, Mikhail Pletnev, André Previn, Sviatoslav Richter, Elisabeth Söderström and other legendary Rachmaninoff interpreters.
Born on 1 April 1873 in the Novgorod region of western Russia, Rachmaninoff moved as a child to St Petersburg, where he enrolled at the city’s conservatoire. He subsequently flourished as a student at the Moscow Conservatory, graduated with its prestigious Great Gold Medal and, in 1893, saw his opera Aleko achieve great success. Plunged into depression four years later by the disastrous premiere of his First Symphony, he rebuilt his confidence with the help of Dr Nikolay Dahl and went on to produce such major works as the Second and Third Piano Concertos, Second Symphony, The Bells and two more operas, Francesca da Rimini and The Miserly Knight, over the next 20 years. He emigrated after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, ultimately settling in the US, where he focused primarily on his career as a soloist. He continued to compose, however, and the rich melodic invention of such late masterworks as the Variations on a Theme of Corelli (his last work for solo piano), the Paganini Rhapsody, Third Symphony and Symphonic Dances delighted audiences worldwide. Rachmaninoff died in Beverly Hills on 28 March 1943.

“This album captures a uniquely memorable performance by the Metropolitan Opera and its stars, and demonstrates the power of art to deliver a clear message to the forces of darkness that would destroy a nation,” Peter Gelb, the Met’s general director, said. “I hope this concert brings a measure of comfort and moral support to the suffering people of Ukraine, and that it reminds the world that we stand with them.”
Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus with a roster of star musical soloists offering solace through their art. Dr. Clemens Trautmann, President of Deutsche Grammophon, believes the recording represents a beautiful symbol of support and solidarity. “A Concert for Ukraine,” he notes, “enabled some of today’s finest musicians to show their compassion and light a beacon of hope for the Ukrainian people.”

Ground-breaking: The new Beethoven Symphony Cycle by Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe

Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe present Beethoven’s nine symphonies in what is the very first recorded cycle to be based on the recently concluded New Complete Edition of the composer’s works. “I’m interested in how Beethoven’s music can surprise us today,” says Maestro Nézet-Séguin. “Our interpretation should make the audience feel as if they were hearing this music for the first time. That is my goal.” Set for release by Deutsche Grammophon on 15 July 2022 as a 5‑CD edition, Beethoven: The Symphonies will also be available digitally in standard stereo and in the immersive Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio formats.
Originally planned as part of the Beethoven 250 celebrations, this project was postponed by the coronavirus pandemic. Its concerts were rescheduled and recorded in July 2021 at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, where orchestra and conductor were joined in the Ninth Symphony by soloists Siobhan Stagg, Ekaterina Gubanova, Werner Güra and Florian Boesch and the professional choristers of Laurence Equilbey’s Accentus.
The COE first recorded the Beethoven cycle thirty years ago, producing pioneering work with its first Honorary Member Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Its musicians were delighted to rediscover the symphonies with Nézet-Séguin, also now an Honorary Member of the orchestra. Building on their experience of working together, which dates back to 2008 and has already produced acclaimed DG recordings of the complete symphonies of Schumann and Mendelssohn, Nézet-Séguin and the COE players approached their third composer-led project for the Yellow Label by developing fresh interpretations informed by the recently concluded New Complete Edition of Beethoven’s works.
The scholarly-critical edition replaces decade after decade of editorial clutter with countless details of articulation and expression recovered from multiple original sources. Among the innovations listeners will hear in this recording is the revised and expanded role of the contrabassoon in the Ninth Symphony, a work edited by Dr Beate Angelika Kraus of the Beethoven Archive in Bonn, who has written a fascinating account of certain aspects of the detective work involved in her research for the booklet notes that accompany the recording.
Maestro Nézet-Séguin and the COE’s July 2021 Baden-Baden Beethoven celebration, presented as a mini-festival of four concerts, raised spirits at a time when audiences were finally able to return to the concert hall after multiple lockdowns. Each concert in the belated 250th-birthday tribute to the composer was streamed live and recorded by Deutsche Grammophon, and the cycle as a whole garnered widespread critical praise.
The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung praised the conductor for his “elegant and discreet” Beethoven, and noted that “highly focused communication between conductor and orchestra and beautifully coordinated interplay between the different sections became the hallmark of each of the nine symphonies”. Bachtrack, meanwhile, hailed the “musical intelligence behind Nézet-Séguin’s approach” as he conducted a COE “on superlative form”, with a special mention for their “exuberant, musically thrilling performance” of the Ninth.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s Beethoven cycle adds another major landmark to his much-lauded Deutsche Grammophon discography, which began in 2012 with a recording of Mozart’s Don Giovanni that earned rave reviews and prompted Gramophone to describe him as “a superb Mozartian”. Since then, he has recorded five more of the composer’s mature operas – these last in company with the COE, with whom he has also released the aforementioned Mendelssohn and Schumann cycles, Visions of Prokofiev (with Lisa Batiashvili), and Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 (with Seong-Jin Cho). Other highlights include recordings of Rachmaninoff with The Philadelphia Orchestra, of which he is Music Director, and an album of solo piano music, Introspection, released last summer. In April this year, Maestro Nézet-Séguin’s achievements were recognised by the industry’s most prestigious awards when he won his first Grammy (Best Orchestral Performance) for his recording with The Philadelphia Orchestra of Florence Price’s Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3.

Florence Price’s Music Showcased by
Yannick Nézet-Séguin and The Philadelphia Orchestra

The Philadelphia Orchestra and its Music Director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin release their latest album Florence Price: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3 to celebrate the achievements of Florence Price in surmounting systemic barriers of African-Americans and women in classical music.
Price came to prominence almost ninety years ago. The composer’s Symphony No. 1 was the first symphonic work by a Black woman to be played by a major American orchestra.
Much of her music then fell into neglect for superficial reasons, as Nézet-Séguin comments. Therefore, The Philadelphia Orchestra brings her music back with their latest recording available to download and stream, released today, 24 September 2021.
“We’re delighted to record the music of Florence Price for Deutsche Grammophon,” comments Nézet-Séguin. “So much important music around the world has been neglected, not because of the quality of the work, but for superficial reasons. It’s so important to me and to The Philadelphia Orchestra to look at these works, bring back the music of composers we believe in, like Florence Price, and continue broadening the repertoire to give a much more diverse representation of who we are as a society today.”
Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1885, Florence Price received instruction in music from her mother and went on to study composition at the New England Conservatory in Boston and privately with its director George Whitefield Chadwick. After her marriage, she and her family moved to Chicago to escape the racial conflicts of the south. She then divorced her abusive husband and focused on bringing up her children, supporting the family by working as a pianist, organist, teacher and composer.
Her Symphony No. 1 in E minor (1931–32), winner of the Rodman Wanamaker Contest in Musical Composition, was first performed in 1933 by Frederick Stock and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Stock’s support encouraged Price to create other large-scale works. Her Third Symphony, originally commissioned by the Federal Music Project during the Great Depression, was first performed in 1940.
Notes Nezet-Seguin, “In her First Symphony, we hear folkloric melodies blended with church music chords, and chords that are opening up to jazz, to create something that sounds quintessentially American. She was adapting a European form and putting it into her own language … In the Third Symphony, every melody feels as if it should be sung … The material is so vocal, the writing is almost choral. And I love the fact that the orchestration encourages solos from everywhere in the orchestra … It feels as if she loved all the instruments equally.”
Although Price continued to compose and teach until her death in 1953, her music was routinely dismissed as conservative by ultra-modernists. Meanwhile, doors that might otherwise have opened remained firmly shut thanks to racism and sexism. She continued to be cited as one of the earliest African-American composers to achieve nationwide acclaim in the US, but performances, publications and recordings of her work remained rare.
Happily, a revival is now underway. Price’s First and Third Symphonies were issued in an impressive scholarly edition in 2008. The following year a batch of manuscript scores, long believed to have been lost, were discovered by the new owners of the composer’s former summer home in St Anne, Illinois. In exploring her music, on stage and in the studio, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and The Philadelphia Orchestra aim to help restore Price to her rightful place among other leading twentieth-century American composers.
The conductor sums up this desire with reference to the Third Symphony: “I hope when we play it … and as other orchestras play it, one day – and hopefully sooner rather than later – it will become as familiar and as much part of the canon and part of who we are as an orchestra as any other symphony by Tchaikovsky or Rachmaninoff.”

Yannick Nézet-Séguin announces his first Piano Solo Album

Der renommierte Dirigent Yannick Nézet-Séguin kündigt die Veröffentlichung seines ersten Solo-Klavieralbums "Introspection: Solo Piano Sessions" bei Deutsche Grammophon für Juni an.

Famous conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin is also a versatile pianist. In Summer 2020, when the pandemic turned down most of the cultural life all over the world, he found, as he describes it, “kind of a salvation” in playing the piano – and recorded his very first Piano Solo Album, inspired also by the memory of his admired teacher Anisia Campos who had passed away that year.
Playing the piano “gave me an opportunity for introspection, something that I think most of us did – not only artists and musicians, but every human being – recalibrating our priorities, what our purpose is in life, and what our aspirations are“, says Yannick Nézet-Séguin about this project. However, “now that I’m a conductor, when I go back to my instrument I especially want to find the intimacy and the softer colors, the soothing ones and also the painful ones, the unknown areas where composers go”.
The album Introspection is set to be released digitally on 4 June 2021 and will be followed by a vinyl release later in the summer. It is available for pre-order now and the first pre-release track Rachmaninoff: Moments Musicaux, Op. 16: Nr. 3 in B Minor, is released today!

Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky’s death in April 2021, The Philadelphia Orchestra and their Principal Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin are honouring the Russian composer with a recording of his Funeral Song, op. 5. This early work was only recently rediscovered: Stravinsky wrote it in 1908 under the impression of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s death – the famous composer having been his highly respected teacher –, but the orchestral score has been presumed lost since the troubles of the Russian Revolution in 1917. However, when the St. Petersburg Conservatory was renovated in 2016, the complete orchestra parts of the Funeral Song were found, which of course attracted wide interest in the musical world.
This EP is released today, 2 April 2021.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra release a new Rachmaninoff album

The Philadelphia Orchestra and their Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin are embarking on another project of Rachmaninoff’s works, presenting his three Symphonies and other orchestral works. When Rachmaninoff’s 1st Symphony was premiered in 1897 by a badly prepared orchestra the performance turned out to be a disaster which obviously hurt the young composer deeply, not even 24 years old. Yet, later decades proved this early work to be absolutely worth a listen when performed by a first-class orchestra and conductor.
This album is the first of three Rachmaninoff releases with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, followed by recordings of Symphony No. 2 and The Isle of the Death in 2022 and, commemorating the 150th anniversary of Rachmaninoff’s birthday in 2023, Symphony No. 3 and The Bells.
This first album featuring Rachmaninoff: Symphony No. 1 & Symphonic Dances is released today, 29 January 2021!
Sergei Rachmaninoff’s symphonic works, among the most powerful and popular in the concert repertoire, hold a special place in the story of one of America’s greatest musical ensembles. The Philadelphia Orchestra and its Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin are about to add a thrilling new chapter with the landmark launch of a cycle of Rachmaninoff’s three symphonies and other orchestral scores for Deutsche Grammophon. The project follows naturally from their recordings of the Russian Romantic composer’s piano concertos with Daniil Trifonov, the most recent of which – Destination Rachmaninov · Arrival – is in the running for a 2021 Grammy Award.
The first album pairs the early Symphony No.1 with the Symphonic Dances, Rachmaninoff’s last major composition, written for and dedicated to The Philadelphia Orchestra and its then conductor Eugene Ormandy and premiered by them 80 years ago this month. The second (Symphony No.2 and The Isle of the Dead) will be issued in early 2022, while the third and final recording (Symphony No.3 and The Bells) will appear as part of the commemorations of the composer’s 150th birthday in April 2023.
Nézet-Séguin has recorded a series of webisodes about the three albums for DG. Speaking about the repertoire on the first release, he says, “Conducting Rachmaninoff’s cycle of symphonic works is a fascinating journey: there’s nearly 45 years between the First Symphony and the Symphonic Dances – they’re almost the Alpha and Omega of his life as a creator.” Summing up the recording experience with his players as a whole, he concludes, “It’s just a true joy to do it with the orchestra that Rachmaninoff himself billed as the best in the world.”
“We’re immensely proud of our relationship with Yannick Nézet-Séguin and delighted with his Rachmaninoff recordings with The Philadelphia Orchestra for the Yellow Label,” comments Dr Clemens Trautmann, President Deutsche Grammophon. “The Philadelphia Orchestra performed and recorded with the composer and brought joy to his final years. Yannick understands the value of tradition and of his orchestra’s unique legacy as champions of Rachmaninoff’s music. Beyond that he has the special genius required to reveal compelling insights into some of the best-known of all orchestral works. His new symphonic cycle will be the starting point for the celebration of Rachmaninoff’s anniversary year in 2023. And above and beyond that it’s sure to stand as an enduring measure of the very best in classical music.”
“Rachmaninoff wrote with the sound of The Philadelphia Orchestra in mind, and that special musical connection comes across movingly in this recording,” adds Philadelphia Orchestra President and CEO Matías Tarnopolsky. “In collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon, we celebrate this rich history and Rachmaninoff’s extraordinary music, brought to life in a way only possible with Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin and The Philadelphia Orchestra.”
Each of The Philadelphia Orchestra’s Rachmaninoff albums will also be available to download in Dolby Atmos format, underlining Deutsche Grammophon’s commitment to the immersive listening experience and crystal-clear quality of Dolby’s sound technology. Rachmaninoff’s romantic melodies, rich orchestrations and sonorous harmonies are ideally suited to the purity and precision of Dolby Atmos.
Having signed an exclusive contract with DG in May 2018, Yannick Nézet-Séguin is also set to release his Yellow Label debut album as solo pianist in spring 2021.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads Mahler Symphony No. 8

Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads The Philadelphia Orchestra along with a team of top-rank international soloists and massed choirs in a recording of Mahler’s monumental Eighth Symphony to mark the centenary of the United States premiere. The performances were held at Verizon Hall in the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia and recorded by Deutsche Grammophon. “A century after its US premiere, it is still an event whenever an orchestra performs Mahler’s Eighth Symphony,” comments Nézet-Séguin. “We had the chance to reflect on what had happened in those hundred years and get back to the era, around the beginning of the twentieth century, when The Philadelphia Orchestra rose to the top by championing such iconic pieces.“

Beyond the Horizon - Daniil Trifonov

Following the success of Destination Rachmaninov – Departure, the second part of Daniil Trifonov's journey through Rachmaninov's piano works (Destination Rachmaninov – Arrival) is released today. Recorded together with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Yannick Nézet-Séguin the album unites the acclaimed Russian-born artist’s account of Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto, one of the most difficult and demanding in the repertoire, with his searing interpretation of the composer’s First Piano Concerto. It also includes Trifonov’s own arrangement of Rachmaninov's famous, beloved, heart-rending “Vocalise”, as well as an original piano transcription of the first movement of Rachmaninov's symphony "The Bells", available in both audio and video. A special 4-LP edition of both albums (Destination Rachmaninov) can be ordered exclusively from our DG official store.

Title

María Dueñas Orchestre Métropolitain Yannick Nézet-Séguin

HALVORSEN Violin Concerto · Chant de la "Veslemøy" / Yannick Nézet-Séguin, María Dueñas

Halvorsen: Violin Concerto & Chant de la "Veslemøy"

Violin Concerto, Op. 28 Chant de la "Veslemøy"

This album by star violinist María Dueñas features Johan Halvorsen’s long-lost Violin Concerto and Chant de la “Veslemøy”, recorded with the Orchestre Métropolitain under Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
The album is released in connection with Measures for a Funeral (2024), the film in which the violinist made her acting debut.
Captured live at Montreal’s Maison symphonique in collaboration with DG, the recordings bring renewed attention to Halvorsen’s Violin Concerto, a work dedicated to pioneering Canadian violinist Kathleen Parlow and long believed lost until its rediscovery among her personal papers a decade ago. The concerto is paired with Chant de la “Veslemøy”, a lyrical miniature also closely associated with Parlow.
In Measures for a Funeral, Dueñas appears as the young violinist Elisa, performing the concerto at the film’s emotional climax. Inspired by Parlow’s life, the film explores themes of grief, memory and artistic legacy, while Olivier Alary’s atmospheric score complements Halvorsen’s late-Romantic sound world with music expressing the inner journey of its central character.
The album is available digitally.
A second album featuring the original motion picture soundtrack to Sofia Bohdanowicz’s Measures for a Funeral, will be released digitally on 4 December.
