In the first of a fascinating new series – The Lost Tapes – DG is releasing Rudolf Serkin’s final Beethoven recordings: the “Waldstein” and “Appassionata” Sonatas, made in 1986 and 1989 respectively. Although the project had reached an advanced stage, including a cover design (the 2023 cover has been slightly adapted from that original version), Serkin was too ill to give final approval to the tapes. This historic release has been approved by Judith Serkin, the pianist’s daughter and herself an accomplished musician, to coincide with the 120th anniversary of her father’s birth.
