Filmed between 1977 and 1979, Bernstein’s landmark cycle of the Beethoven Symphonies with the Wiener Philharmoniker was the conductor’s second major audio-visual recording project. The performances, filmed in the legendary Goldener Saal of Vienna’s Musikverein, capture Bernstein in his prime as he presents his mature view on these central works in the repertoire in interpretations of relaxed authority and compelling conviction – and in which his rapport with the musicians of the Wiener Philharmoniker comes across in every bar.
