BERLIOZ Symphonie fantastique / Zubin Mehta | Deutsche Grammophon

Recorded on our joint label Verbier Festival Gold, we release a new album featuring conductor Zubin Mehta’s performance at the Verbier Festival in 2007. 

There, he led the Verbier Festival Orchestra in Berlioz’s well-known Symphony fantastique — a cornerstone of the Romantic repertoire that demands both sonic precision and structural clarity. With calm authority, he shapes the overarching arc and reveals the delicate balance between structure and expression. The young orchestra responds with remarkable focus and tonal refinement: supple strings, incisive winds, and a transparent, finely balanced texture. 

Composed in 1830, Symphonie fantastique traces the obsessive love of a young artist—from lyrical visions to nightmarish extremes, unified by the recurring idée fixe. In Verbier, this narrative emerges without exaggeration, unfolding with clarity and coherence. The result is an interpretation that prioritizes musical integrity and textural detail over overt drama—and draws its lasting impact precisely from this restraint.
