ÆRIS is the ninth album of music by Estonian composer Erkki-Sven Tüür on ECM New Series, drawing attention once again to the composer’s dynamic and expressive music. Olari Elts, a long-time champion of Tüür’s music, conducts the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra in compelling, intensely focused performances of Phantasma, De Profundis and Tüür’s tenth symphony ÆRIS, recorded at the Estonia Concert Hall in Tallinn.

ÆRIS, a vast drama of shifting energies and interactions, scored for horn quartet and orchestra, is a symphony consisting of four movements that merge seamlessly into one another. Tüür comments: “Each movement expresses a different development between the ensemble of soloists and the orchestra. Sometimes their motifs spread into the orchestra like memes that start changing and gradually take on lives of their own…”
