Songful, fiery, flexibly moulded and articulated, Jochum's Schubert is memorably poetic, and warmly captured by the DG engineering.

The Fifth is in excellent mono sound and the C major Symphony is in fine early stereo. By and large these engaging, beautifully shaped and exciting performances have been forgotten, so it is a real treat to rediscover Jochum¿s way with this music. The opening movement of the Fifth is taken steadily, but there is so much affection in the playing and such inner rhythmic life that I found it impossible not to be captivated. The slow movement is a similar delight, and the Minuet is both expressive and energetic. In the finale Jochum¿s qualities as a conductor who could impart drive without ever being relentless are heard to great advantage. Many of the same virtues characterize his reading of the Great C major and, as with the Fifth, the orchestral playing is extremely fine . . . Warmly recommended.

Some of the most famous Debussy recordings ever made have been reissued on DG Originals: Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli playing Book 1 of the Préludes (recorded in June 1978) and both books of "Images" (Juli 1971). This is a record about which . . . I'd never want to be without it . . . I heard him in live performances that were slightly chilling experiences, but this disc shows him at his most searching, provocative and -- quite often -- utterly magical. The sound in the Préludes is excellent . . .

Admirable et significatif document, que DG a eu dix fois raison d'exhumer.
