This "Trout" is clearly in a fast-flowing river, the first movement bubbling with excitement from the off, Trifonov's triplets tripping effortlessly along . . . it's scintillating in its clarity . . . Trifonov & co set the scene with quiet elegance but you're in no doubt that Mutter is the main attraction here, bringing an almost microscopic variety of shadings and colourings to each phrase . . . I like the veiled way in which Mutter introduces the song theme of the fourth movement variations . . . [in which Trifonov] plays with a combination of élan and sensitivity.

. . . [a] highly exhilarating performance of the "Trout" Quintet . . . [in the opening Allegro, the] playing was crisp and brilliant and there was an excellent rapport between all five players. Mutter's playing of the rapid-fire passagework was stunning . . . [in the Scherzo,] the tight, darting interplay between Trifonov and the string players was exceptionally fine. Trifonov produced delightful light, scampering passagework and he really seemed to be in his element. The famous variations were well characterised and I was struck by the dynamic contrasts and startling shifts of character . . . a very fine performance and illuminated the music in interesting new ways. The final Allegro giusto was full of rambunctious rhythmic energy and the dialogue was excellent throughout. Overall, this was a first-rate performance as one would expect from such a distinguished group of players . . . [Schubert / Notturno D 897]: This performance by Mutter, Trifonov and Hornung had an organic, improvisatory feel as if the music was being newly imagined. All three played worked as one to give us a range of striking impressionistic sonorities . . . ["Ständchen" & "Ellens Gesang"]: Mutter took the leading role in these gorgeous transcriptions producing some highly affecting double stopping in "Ständchen" while allowing the melodic line to soar in "Ave Maria". Trifonov captured the angelic quality of the latter in his flowing accompaniment. Overall, this recording contains a lot of very high quality playing . . .
Das hervorragend zusammengewürfelte Quintett Daniil Trifonov, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Hwayoon Lee, Maximilian Hornung, Roman Patkoló hat es offenbar geschafft, künstlerisch auf einen fruchtbaren Nenner zu kommen. Das zum Vorteil einer überaus hörenswerten Interpretation, die glücklicherweise ohne Vibrato auskommt. Wir können eine hoch energetische, passionierte Wiedergabe (großartig ausdrücklich Roman Patkoló auf dem Kontrabass) genießen, wobei freilich die technische Perfektion und die glockenspielreine Artikulation in den hohen Registern des Klavierspiels besonders beeindrucken. Alle fünf Musiker finden für jeden der fünf Sätze einen individuellen Zugang, und können hier ihr hohes Ausdrucksvermögen genuin unter Beweis stellen.
En primus inter pares, Mutter mène l'interprétation avec fougue et délicatesse à la fois, et l'on peut gager que cet enregistrement du chef-d'oeuvre salmonidé de Schubert entrera bientôt dans les annales discographiques.
