The prodigiously gifted Yundi Li is in his mid-twenties and here he is in a recital programme that would test the greatest pianists from both a musical and technical point of view . . . Recorded in Baden-Baden in May 2004, this is a remarkable concert, and there can be no doubt about Li's virtuosity, or his musical intelligence . . . In the Liszt Sonata there is a . . . convincing sense of command and control, and this is an account of great authority and drive . . . Li conveys a real sense of this music's sweep and its explosive originality. This is a young player's performance, with some amazingly fast speeds . . . he generates real electricity and this is a performance that impresses on repeated hearings . . . The sound on this DVD is really magnificent and the documentation is good. Li is a formidable player, and the Liszt pieces in particular make this a disc that is well worth exploring.

He is a musician and pianist of phenomenal gifts and his artistic integrity would seem to be unimpaired. Of Horowitzian virtuosity, but without the excesses, he is both refined and electrifying. Facially active (he is given to little smiles) and physically demonstrative, though not extravagantly, his rather bland charisma with the audience is palpable.

. . Les bonus sont substantiels . . .
