. . . an interpreter who is unafraid to delve into the depths of this work. His tempos are brisk, which lends a sense of impending fear to the motoric scherzo, and he never lets up on the race to the finish in the last movement. The first movement, meanwhile, is given real symphonic breadth, building inexorably to a shattering climax, while the slow movement exhibits pain and suffering more than solace. The analogue sound . . . is warm and wide-ranging in this 1980s remastering. Few conductors have succeeded as wholeheartedly in this symphony. Even against recent full-price competition, Karajan's intense reading still stands up extremely well.
