. . . he takes the full measure of the work's darkly mysterious atmosphere; and some of the most impressive climaxes, like the finale's conclusion, actually develop overwhelming kinetic energy precisely on account of Mintz's and Levine's more deliberate tempos. Throughout the searching first movement, the rapturous second, and the thumping finale, Mintz emits a beaon's diffuse glow rather than a laser's cutting beam . . . Mintz sounds far forward throughout, with the engineers' spotlight flattering his rich and opulent tone . . . It's easy to echo, from nearly a generation's remove, McColley's strong recommendation of the Symphony -- but it's also easy to make an equally urgent case for Mintz's wholly individual, moodily rhetorical account of the Concerto.
