With The Source‚ Justus Eichhorn presents his debut album on Deutsche Grammophon. Born in Weimar in 2009, the pianist, composer and arranger, just 16 years old, dedicates his first release on the yellow label entirely to the musical history of his home city. The album was released on 11 September 2026 digitally, on CD and on vinyl.

The Source: a tribute to Weimar, a city of music

Weimar is far more than Eichhorn’s birthplace. The Thuringian city ranks among the most important centres of music in Europe. Johann Sebastian Bach worked here as court organist and concertmaster, Franz Liszt shaped nineteenth-century musical life here as court Kapellmeister, and the young Richard Strauss also took up the baton at the Weimar Court Theatre. The Source follows exactly these threads: the programme brings together works by composers closely connected with Weimar, among them Bach, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Hindemith and Richard Strauss.

The album: from Bach and Liszt to his own compositions

The repertoire is as multifaceted as the city itself. Alongside piano works by these masters, Eichhorn also emerges as an independent creative voice: The Source features the first recording of three of his own compositions, his personal arrangement of the Largo from Vivaldi’s Flautino Concerto in C major, RV 443, and imaginative reinterpretations of études by Carl Czerny. The result is a programme that unites tradition and innovation. Several tracks appeared as advance releases, among them the Vivaldi arrangement and Eichhorn’s own piece Silent Fields, performed on an upright piano.

Justus Eichhorn: pianist, composer and exceptional talent at 16

Justus Eichhorn is among the most remarkable young artists in classical music. He was already improvising at the piano at the age of three, received his first lessons at six, and made his concert debut at ten. Awards followed, including first prize at the Carl Bechstein Competition (2019). Today he studies with Grigory Gruzman at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar and attends the city’s Musikgymnasium Schloss Belvedere, a specialist music school where he is also learning to conduct. With sold-out concerts from Hamburg and Zurich to Shenzhen and Seoul, and an online community of more than half a million followers, he reaches an audience that extends well beyond the traditional classical listenership.

The Source on CD, vinyl and in Dolby Atmos

Released on 11 September 2026, The Source is available in several formats. In addition to the CD and digital edition, the album is also available on vinyl and in Dolby Atmos, which offers a particularly immersive, spatial listening experience.
