On the new deluxe edition Rarities composer Roger Eno expands on his already released album Without Wind, Without Air&nbsp;and&nbsp;brings together eight previously unreleased tracks, carefully selected and newly sequenced to form a cohesive and standalone listening experience. &nbsp;
The project offers a fresh perspective on the original album&rsquo;s Berlin recording sessions by revisiting and recontextualizing previously set-aside works, presented by the composer as a thoughtfully curated new narrative. Blending intimate solo piano pieces with richly layered ensemble works, the music features accordion, clarinet, bass, strings and synthesizers. Eno himself plays piano, synths and accordion, and is joined by the Scoring Berlin strings &ndash; conducted by Jonathan Stockhammer &ndash; producer Christian Badzura (synths), Tobias Fleischer (bass) and Alexander Gl&uuml;cksmann (clarinet). &nbsp;

Biography

Roger &amp; Brian Eno first worked together musically in 1983, during the recording of Brian Eno&rsquo;s influential &ldquo;Apollo&rdquo; soundtrack album. While Brian (1948) made a name for himself as an &ldquo;anti-musician&rdquo; and experimental producer, Roger (1959) worked in music therapy and recorded as a pianist, composer and singer. The English brothers collaborated again on the celebrated album &ldquo;Mixing Colours&rdquo; (Deutsche Grammophon, 2020). They performed together for the first time at the Acropolis in 2021.

Roger Eno&rsquo;s third solo album for&nbsp;Deutsche Grammophon,&nbsp;Without Wind / Without Air, was released last autumn to widespread praise from the music press. The EP cover has again been designed by Roger&rsquo;s daughter&nbsp;Cecily Eno, who has extended the themes of transience and fragility to this collection&rsquo;s visual identity.
Roger will be performing some of this new music, as well as tracks from&nbsp;Without Wind / Without Air&nbsp;and earlier solo DG albums&nbsp;The Turning Year&nbsp;and&nbsp;the skies, they shift like chords, at the atmospheric&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.deutschegrammophon.com/en/artists/roger-eno/on-tour">Union Chapel in London on 21&nbsp;May 2026</a>. Accompanying him in his first UK live appearance since his 2024 sold-out concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall will be Cecily Eno (vocals) and other special guests on strings, bass and percussion.

Revealing how a&nbsp;Rarities&nbsp;collection comes about, Roger explains that when recording an album for DG he chooses his &ldquo;strong favourites&rdquo; from the sessions, which inevitably means some &ldquo;extremely valuable tracks&rdquo; have to be temporarily discarded. However, the function of&nbsp;Rarities&nbsp;is that these can then become a collection in their own right &ndash; as always, in a carefully chosen order. &ldquo;By the time a&nbsp;Rarities&nbsp;collection is released,&rdquo; adds Eno, &ldquo;it&rsquo;s like hearing the tracks again for the first time, each one being placed in a position in which it benefits the whole. I must say, I like this selection very much.&rdquo;
This latest release opens with the solo piano piece&nbsp;Incense. Conjuring &ldquo;a quiet garden in a Moorish palace&rdquo;, the music is given time to breathe, individual notes resonating and almost fading into silence. Inspired by Roger&rsquo;s fascination with time and its passing,&nbsp;Shadow Clock&nbsp;consists of a simple melody surrounded by gently shimmering strings &ndash; &ldquo;above the entrance to the main hall is placed a sundial counting the hours from dawn to dusk [as] you sit under an orange tree in the shade&rdquo;. Then&nbsp;The Quiet of Snow&nbsp;depicts the pleasant coolness of the snow-capped mountains in the distance: &ldquo;You never see that snow fall, you never see it thaw, it sits there throughout the years in silence&rdquo;. &nbsp;
A very different soundworld can be heard at the heart of the album, as Eno takes his original&nbsp;Massacre of the Innocents&nbsp;track and expands it into a three-part sequence &ndash; an anguished musical response to recent conflicts, and specifically to the suffering of children, which &ldquo;rammed home the obscenity of it all&rdquo;.
False Memory Waltz&nbsp;represents the shadows of the past that haunt historic buildings &ndash; &ldquo;it is the disused ballroom that holds the most potent ghosts of memory. For it is in this room that some people feel certain they can hear music; in this room, in different clothes, they feel sure they once danced.&rdquo;
The closing track,&nbsp;Getting the Picture, is a cinematic miniature of vast landscapes and mysterious happenings. &ldquo;Leaving behind everything you&rsquo;ve seen, you take the road that heads to the mountains. First you must cross the desert where mirages shimmer like lakes, where rocks crawl with lizards and the sun is relentless. You keep your eyes on the snow line, which doesn&rsquo;t seem to get any closer. There&rsquo;s no-one else to be seen, you&rsquo;re on your own, not really knowing where you are going. Heaven, you hope&hellip;&rdquo;

Roger Eno Shares a New Single, Alembic Distillation

Out now,&nbsp;Alembic Distillation is the second track to be unveiled from Without Wind / Without Air, Roger Eno&rsquo;s forthcoming third solo album for Deutsche Grammophon. It follows on from Forgiveness, which was shared earlier this month, and is one of three pieces for solo piano written and performed by Roger on the new album.
As Eno explains, &ldquo;An &lsquo;alembic&rsquo; was used in alchemy and early scientific processes to make spirits (aqua vitae). The process of distillation therefore separates the &lsquo;spirit&rsquo; from the original &lsquo;body&rsquo; of that which is being treated. It turns not water into wine but wine into cognac. In this piece I wished to extract the &lsquo;essence&rsquo; of a piece &ndash; ridding it of any &lsquo;base&rsquo; material, flamboyance, excess of decoration, unnecessary movement, etc. to reveal the simple beauty of an ostinato and the clarity of a single lead line.&rdquo;
Without Wind / Without Air is released digitally and on vinyl on 31&nbsp;October 2025, with another single, There Was A Ship &ndash; a folk ballad sung by Roger&rsquo;s daughter Cecily Eno &ndash; out on 10&nbsp;October. A limited-edition LP version of the album includes a signed artcard of an abstract image created by Roger that suggests mayflies dancing above water. The mayfly, a symbol for the brevity of life, also features in Cecily&rsquo;s cover design for the album. A follow-up to 2023&rsquo;s the skies, they shift like chords (&ldquo;a delicate, deeply visceral enchantment&rdquo; &ndash; Atwood Magazine), Without Wind / Without Air borrows its title from a lyric by Italian songwriter Pier Luigi Andreoni.

British composer and multi-instrumentalist Roger Eno has recorded Without Wind / Without Air, his third solo album for Deutsche Grammophon. Following on from the success of The Turning Year (2022) and the skies, they shift like chords (2023), the new album includes both solo piano pieces and tracks orchestrated for various combinations of clarinet, guitar, bass, strings, synths, percussion and electronics. There are guest vocal appearances from soprano Grace Davidson and Roger&rsquo;s daughters Cecily Eno and Lotti Eno, with Roger himself singing on The Moon And The Sea. Jonathan Stockhammer conducts the Scoring Berlin strings on three tracks, while Eno&rsquo;s friend and producer Christian Badzura arranged and plays on several tracks as well as having co-written the opening and closing numbers, Forgiveness and After Rain.
Without Wind / Without Air will be released digitally and on vinyl on 31&nbsp;October 2025. A first digital single, Forgiveness, will be shared on 5 September, with Alembic Distillation out on 19 September and There Was A Ship on 10 October. A limited-edition LP version includes a signed artcard of an image created by Roger Eno. Though abstract in origin, an experiment with pen and ink, it suggests insects in flight or mayflies dancing above water. The mayfly, long a symbol for the brevity of life, also features on the album cover, designed by Cecily Eno. &nbsp;
The album title comes from the lyrics of Doubled by the Sun, by Italian band The Doubling Riders. &ldquo;My friend Pier Luigi Andreoni and I worked on various projects together in Italy in the 1990s,&rdquo; says Eno. &ldquo;He kindly gave me permission to use this line, which has a wonder-filled, late-summer atmosphere of almost motionlessness and peace.&rdquo;
The sheer poetry of the lyric was enough for him at first, but has recently taken on a new meaning, as he explains: &ldquo;I was forced to look at the fragility of species and climate, and their dependence on &lsquo;turns of chance&rsquo; and carelessness. This alters &lsquo;without wind, without air&rsquo; into a warning, a vision of a terribly bleak future &ndash; if any future at all.&rdquo;
That shift of meaning is audible in the dissonances of the title track, which call to mind an impending storm. Roger&rsquo;s subtle, slowly moving piano line is joined by the dark sounds of low strings, synths and electronics; high, wordless vocals from Grace Davidson; and the piercing wail of Alexander Gl&uuml;cksmann&rsquo;s clarinet. There is a similar feel to The Final Year Of Blossom, again featuring the pure tones of Davidson&rsquo;s voice, a track inspired by the fear that one day the Japanese cherry trees will fail to bloom.
Happier days are conjured by There Was A Ship, a folk ballad about reunited lovers, sung by Cecily Eno. She performed this song with both her father and her uncle in the amphitheatre of Herodes Atticus in Athens, as part of the acclaimed and first-ever joint concert given by Roger and Brian Eno (<a href="https://www.stage-plus.com/video/vod_concert_APNM8GRFDPHMASJKBSP3GCO">available to stream on STAGE+</a>). In There Was A Ship&rsquo;s mournful counterpart, The Moon And The Sea, Roger tells a tale of unrequited love &ndash; his poignant vocal line was captured in one take.
Without Wind / Without Air is punctuated by three magical tracks for Roger&rsquo;s solo piano. Spell offers another folk-influenced flowing melody, in contrast to the more classical Alembic Distillation, with its echoes of the keyboard music of Bach and Scarlatti, while the softly resonating Saudade (&ldquo;Nostalgia&rdquo;) lives long in the memory.

Roger Eno Revisits 'The Turning Year'  To Create Three New 'Rarities' EPs For Deutsche Grammophon

The Turning Year, Roger Eno&rsquo;s solo debut album for Deutsche Grammophon, opened a window into the insights of the British composer. His radiant reflections on the changing seasons, released last April, speak of beauty and stillness, sadness and simple pleasures. Now Eno has revisited and expanded this repertoire for a series of three EPs featuring a combination of illuminating reworks, previously unreleased tracks and gems from the album sessions. Collectively entitled The Turning Year &middot; Rarities, the project sees him collaborate with violinist Rosie Toll, members of acclaimed German string ensemble Scoring Berlin and his daughters Cecily and Lotti Eno, as well as presenting many of his own solo works. The first EP, Rarities &middot; Piano, comes out on 9 September 2022, with Rarities &middot; Bells following on 11 November. &nbsp;Rarities &middot; Quartets will be released in spring 2023 alongside a vinyl album featuring all the Rarities material, together with a bonus track.
&ldquo;Close relatives to The Turning Year, these EPs have given me a reason to release this unheard music, some of which was recorded during the Berlin sessions when the album was laid down, and which includes some personal highlights,&rdquo; explains Eno.
Rarities &middot; Piano opens with Eno&rsquo;s solo piano version of &ldquo;The Turning Year&rdquo;. As with so much of his music, this track is deeply rooted in the composer&rsquo;s autobiography. &ldquo;It owes its continued existence to my younger daughter,&rdquo; he notes. &ldquo;For years it was known as &lsquo;Lotti&rsquo;s Favourite&rsquo;, as whenever she heard me play it, she&rsquo;d remark on how much she liked it. The piece has a curious mix of light and darkness, a mix I am constantly striving to work with.&rdquo;
This first EP presents three previously unreleased tracks, starting with two further solo piano works, &ldquo;Or So I&rsquo;ve Read&rdquo; and &ldquo;Softly&rdquo;, which explore shared musical material from strikingly different perspectives. &ldquo;Still Day&rdquo; features yearning improvisations from folk-fiddler Rosie Toll, the ambiguities of its title and music embracing both the promise of early morning and the mysterious calm that so often follows daybreak.
All three EPs draw from the fabric of Eno&rsquo;s life, his family and the landscape and history, country lanes and waterways of his native East Anglia. Rarities &middot; Bells evokes echoes from a distant past and the consolation of quietude. &ldquo;The area in which I live is blessed with isolated medieval churches, many of which are open to those who wish for silence, such as myself,&rdquo; says Eno. This second EP couples a grand-piano version of its title track with another that contains the striking duetting voices of his daughters, Cecily and Lotti, first heard together on Roger&rsquo;s performance for NPR&rsquo;s Tiny Desk. Cecily is also the creative force behind Roger&rsquo;s visual material for this and the album project.
The collaborative spirit continues in the third EP, Rarities &middot; Quartets, performed by a quartet of players from the string ensemble Scoring Berlin with whom Eno recorded some of the tracks on The Turning Year. &nbsp;A melancholy atmosphere prevails here, in three reimagined versions of &ldquo;Slow Motion&rdquo; and the equally moving &ldquo;Venerable Dilemma&rdquo;.
&ldquo;I cherish the beauty of working with others,&rdquo; says Roger Eno. &ldquo;Music to me is an almost symbolic action, involving, as it does, &lsquo;harmony&rsquo; &ndash; a synonym for love, consensuality and friendship. These EPs contain a great deal of myself and of others.&rdquo;

Roger Eno Announces Debut Solo Album On DG: The Turning Year

Roger Eno is a British composer and musician whose distinctive style as a recording artist has attracted a cult following. Last year he made his debut on Deutsche Grammophon with Mixing Colours, his first duo album with his brother, Brian, which was released to great acclaim. Now he returns for his solo debut album on DG The Turning Year, an album offering a comprehensive presentation of Roger&rsquo;s solo work, set to be released 22 April 2022.
The Turning Year allows the listener to step through Roger Eno&rsquo;s looking-glass, filled with glimpses of pastoral scenes and free-flowing, affecting compositions. These pieces are exquisitely realised by Eno as pianist and he is joined on some tracks by the lauded German string ensemble Scoring Berlin. With a blend of recent compositions and live favourites from Eno&rsquo;s concert repertoire, the album offers a comprehensive presentation of the composer&rsquo;s solo work. &ldquo;The Turning Year is like a collection of short stories or photographs of individual scenes, each with its own character but somehow closely related to the other,&rdquo; explains Eno. &ldquo;Listening to it made me think about how we live our lives in facets, how we catch fleeting glimpses, how we walk through our lives, how we notice the turning year.&rdquo;
Listeners have the chance to sample a flavour of The Turning Year&rsquo;s haunting beauty on 14 January with the release of the title track as its first single. Here Eno&rsquo;s melodic solo piano is underscored by a beautiful string orchestration &ndash; listeners can witness the interaction between the players in a live performance video recorded at Berlin&rsquo;s legendary Teldex Studio.

&ldquo;When Deutsche Grammophon released Mixing Colours, I took it as a real honour and a tremendous compliment,&rdquo; recalls Roger Eno, a musician known for his lack of pretension. &ldquo;I never expected that the invitation would lead me to a solo album with them. It gave me the chance to reflect on my intense love for music and the area of Britain where I live. And I thought about how Britain is now, a place of division and growing inequality, how it was when I was growing up, and about my nostalgia for a better place that no longer exists, or perhaps never existed.&rdquo;
The Turning Year&rsquo;s oldest composition, &ldquo;Stars and Wheels&rdquo;, began life twenty years ago as an improvisation that Roger played on a single-manual organ in the redundant medieval church of St&nbsp;Gregory in the Norfolk village of Heckingham. He recorded it soon after in his home studio and, by overlapping the speeds at which it was played, created an aural metaphor for what he calls a state of &ldquo;glorious decay&rdquo;, like that slowly consuming the ancient walls of the church. &ldquo;Stars and Wheels&rdquo; was further transformed last summer as Eno worked with the album&rsquo;s producer Christian Badzura, DG&rsquo;s Vice President A&amp;R New Repertoire.
Other highlights on the album include &ldquo;Hymn&rdquo;, a slow paean originally conceived as a solo improvisation; &ldquo;A Place We Once Walked&rdquo;, which opens the album and sets its emotional heartbeat; the mantra-like simplicity of &ldquo;Innocence&rdquo;; &ldquo;On the Horizon&rdquo;, a slowly unfolding meditation on uncertainty and ambiguity; &ldquo;Something Made Out of Nothing&rdquo;, built around the unsettling yet strangely comforting clash of semitones; and &ldquo;Hope (The Kindness of Strangers)&rdquo;, a piece touched by the utmost tenderness and compassion.
Eno was born in the Suffolk market town of Woodbridge. He became immersed in music at school and bought a battered upright piano with money earned every Saturday as a butcher&rsquo;s boy. His musical education continued at Colchester Institute School of Music. After a brief interlude playing jazz piano in private clubs in London, he returned to East Anglia.
As well as first collaborating with his brother Brian and Daniel Lanois in 1983 on Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks,&nbsp;he has made several solo albums and other collaborative pieces with the likes of Peter Hammill, No-Man (co-founded by Steven Wilson) and his first &ldquo;band&rdquo;, the ambient supergroup Channel Light Vessel, whose line-up included Laraaji, Kate St. John, Bill Nelson and Japanese cellist Mayumi Tachibana. Roger has also acted as Musical Director for acclaimed actor Tim Robbins.
Within the realm of film music, he and his brother have contributed to David Lynch&rsquo;s Dune (1984), 9&frac12;&nbsp;Weeks (1986) and Dario Argento&rsquo;s Opera (1987), and their score for Danny Boyle&rsquo;s BBC mini-series Mr. Wroe&rsquo;s Virgins was nominated for a BAFTA in 1993. Separately, as a solo composer, Roger scored Trevor Nunn&rsquo;s highly acclaimed production of Harold Pinter&rsquo;s Betrayal at London&rsquo;s National Theatre and, more recently, Nick Hornby&rsquo;s celebrated TV series State of the Union.
For many years Roger Eno has lived in a small town on the border of Suffolk and Norfolk. Those two rural counties, with their quiet lanes, medieval churches, and waterways, have given focus and intensity to the natural introspection of his music. He has described his creative process as one of &ldquo;decomposing&rdquo;, of finding and sleeping on an idea, waking early the next morning and stripping away all excess from it to reveal its essence.
The Turning Year includes booklet notes by Roger Eno and cover artwork by his daughter, Cecily Loris Eno. Roger will also perform music from the album at Haus Zenner in Berlin&rsquo;s Treptower Park (12 May) and the Purcell Room in London (14 May).

The Art of Record Covers 

While it might be a truism that one shouldn&rsquo;t judge a book &ndash; or, by extension, an album &ndash; by its cover, it&rsquo;s equally true that the artwork of a creative project not only plays a crucial role in its marketing but also, in the best cases, forms an integral part of that project&rsquo;s broader aesthetic.

Two forthcoming Deutsche Grammophon releases exemplify just how intimate and intertwined the world of sounds and visuals can be. The first, Hermetism, by esteemed Dutch composer and pianist Joep Beving, is thematically inspired by the ancient spiritual writings of legendary Greek author Hermes Trismegistus and the seven universal laws of nature later compiled in The Kybalion.
Much of the music on Hermetism is shaped by Beving&rsquo;s personal readings on these ideas. Peaceful and contemplative, minimal and sometimes romantic, it also has plenty of intricate detailing, from the spiraling Last Dance, which works with the principle of rhythm, to the clear Middle Eastern influence of Dervish, and the reflective Nocturnal, which Beving has also described as "his own medicine for the pandemic."
The artwork for Hermetism, an almost hieroglyphic-style series of drawings that adorn the main album cover as well as several singles (Nocturnal, For Mark and Last Dance), is as enigmatic and minimal as the music. It was produced by Berlin-based artist <a href="https://www.instagram.com/jonathanniclaus/">Jonathan Niclaus</a>, who has worked for Deutsche Grammophon before, notably on the <a href="https://www.deutschegrammophon.com/en/artists/twelve/xii-1944">Project XII</a> covers; but for Hermitism he employed a different process, painting in direct response to Beving&rsquo;s music rather than with a formal creative brief.
"The concept for the album was delivered without words," he explains. "Joep sent me his new work, I listened to it and received the frequencies. I had to start drawing immediately. Later he told me what it was called and that it was about the hermetic rules, and then everything made sense. By listening to the sounds I subconsciously transferred the messages into the visual dimension. I translated the emotions generated from the music directly into my drawings. Everything happened automatically. Pasigraphic interpretations of the seven laws of the universe.
Another example of the close interweaving of music and artwork is the upcoming collaboration between British composer Roger Eno and his daughter Cecily, a visual artist. The Turning Year is Eno&rsquo;s upcoming solo album and the highly anticipated follow on from his Deutsche Grammophon debut, Mixing Colours, which was the first official collaboration with his brother, Brian.
A mix of recent and new compositions and favourites from Eno&rsquo;s impressive live concert repertoire, The Turning Year is gently awash with quiet, pastoral moods and free-flowing compositions that showcase his skills as a composer and pianist. He is also joined on some tracks by lauded German string ensemble Scoring Berlin.
"On listening back to the finished album, I felt that it could be seen as a series of short stories or photographs of individual scenes, each containing their own character," says Eno. "It was only after I&rsquo;d finalised the running order that I realised just how much of a close relationship one piece has to another and it was this realisation perhaps that led me to the album&rsquo;s title. I thought about how our years comprise of moments, days, and the changing months. Of how we live our lives in facets, how we catch fleeting glimpses, how we walk through our lives, how we notice the turning year."

Cecily Eno, an illustrator whose intricate, suggestive designs tend to focus on interplay and connection, created the beautiful, organic images that grace the front and back covers and liner notes. "I work primarily in pen and ink and the particular pen I used for this project was one that Roger gifted me on my 21st birthday, so it&rsquo;s fittingly full-circle that I can return the gift in the form of these illustrations many years later. Much like The Turning Year, the drawings speak to the idea of small moments, of shift and change. They are shaped just as much by space as they are particular marks or notes, a quality I&rsquo;ve long appreciated about Roger&rsquo;s music."
