Celebrating World Sleep Day (13 March 2026), composer Roger Eno presents his original composition Tributary.
The basis of the piece is two phrases from Erik Satie’s well-known Gymnopedie No. 1. When the original was written in 1888, it was perceived as extraordinarily unusual. The melody is a single fluid line, the chords are simple and unusual in both their movements and relationships with each other, and the bass pattern is almost static and certainly uneventful – in short, contemporaries considered it to be a joke, since at that time the classical music world was full of noise and activity, bombastic orchestral pieces, trombones, tubas and screaming sopranos, seemingly interminable operas with smashing cymbals and banging tympani. Luckily pieces such as Satie’s have endured into a time when quietness and silence are acknowledged as having their own importance.
World Sleep Day is a global call to action to celebrate healthy sleep. Far too often, sleep medicine professionals and researchers encounter the false belief that sleep is not an important factor in maintaining personal health and wellbeing. Since 2008, the World Sleep Society has used World Sleep Day to encourage its delegates and sleep health advocates to take action in their local communities, clinics, and countries to raise awareness for sleep health.
