SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 8 / Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Long Yu | Deutsche Grammophon

DG China releases the first four recordings from its complete Shostakovich symphony cycle, performed by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Long Yu.

As the first Chinese orchestra to record the complete cycle of Shostakovich’s symphonies, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra will present all 15 works over the course of four seasons, beginning in 2025. The project offers a dedicated interpretation of Shostakovich’s complete symphonic legacy and will culminate in 2029, when the complete recorded cycle will be released to mark the 150th anniversary of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to the digital release, Symphonies Nos. 7, 8 and 9 are presented as a commemorative 3-LP vinyl box set. Closely connected with the Soviet Union’s “Great Patriotic War”, these three works form Shostakovich’s distinctive War Trilogy and stand among the most representative symphonic works capturing the profound psychological experiences of humanity in wartime.
