Marie Awadis continues Project XII with her single 'Alone'

The Armenian pianist and composer Marie Awadis continues our Project XII series with her new single Alone. She is known for her musical depth and sensitive sound and her music aims at communicating the depth of human emotions and centers around her instrument, the piano, and draws influence from experiences that have shaped her as a human - from deep roots in classical traditions to recurrent folkloristic harmonic elements of her Armenian origins.
Alone is released today, 26 February 2021.

New Voices: Third series of Deutsche Grammophon’s “XII” begins with release of Abbott’s Home

The third series of our &ldquo;Project XII&rdquo; starts this year with the release of Home by Hamburg-based composer and pianist, Abbott. His story doesn&rsquo;t begin as a child with virtuoso fingers flying over piano keys. Instead, his story begins in his youth with YouTube tutorials and a passion for film music. What follows are a degree at the Artez Conservatorium in the Netherlands, commissioned work in the Mecca of film-music Los Angeles and music compositions and productions in Hamburg.
The song Home is Abbott&rsquo;s search for the literal meaning of the word &lsquo;home&rsquo;. He doesn&rsquo;t see it as a physical place, but rather connects it with having certain people around him. This closeness, that he captures musically in &lsquo;Home&rsquo;, is also present in the production process. To preserve the personal and intimate character of the song, he collaborates with close friends and companions. This includes the talented cellist Ruben Jeyasunduram, who recorded every cello part.
Home captures the essential spirit of Abbott&rsquo;s music, simple and stripped back yet saturated with strong emotions. The 25-year-old Dutch musician, otherwise known as Thomas Muis, is part of Hamburg-based 2WEI, a collective of composers acclaimed for their music for films, games, commercials and movie trailers. He adopted the artistic alias of Abbott to create a separate space in which to develop his musical ideas and language away from his day-to-day work.
His music combines influences from composers such as Max Richter, J&oacute;hann J&oacute;hannsson and Arvo P&auml;rt with his own distinctive lyrical voice. P&auml;rt&rsquo;s example, he notes, has helped him convey emotion in music without the need to use &ldquo;all the bells and whistles&rdquo;.
Abbott believes that less equals more when it comes to melody and harmony. He has created an intimate, uplifting score for &ldquo;XII&rdquo;, a delicate counterpoint of sounds for piano, cello, vocal ensemble and electronics.
&ldquo;XII&rdquo; has grown with new compositions every month since its launch in January 2019. The pioneering project&rsquo;s diverse catalogue is set to gain another dozen pieces in the coming year, starting on 29 January 2021 with the release of Home by Abbott. The monthly rollout continues with works by, among others, Marie Awadis, Dobrawa Czocher and Niklas Paschburg.

Project XII - The Compilation Of 2020

We announce the release of this year&rsquo;s &ldquo;Project XII&rdquo; vinyl featuring all 12 pieces in the 2020 &ldquo;XII&rdquo; series. Renewal has always been part of music, long before the invention of such distinctive categories as &ldquo;Classical&rdquo; or &ldquo;Contemporary&rdquo;. The changing seasons and life&rsquo;s restless stream of feelings and emotions lie behind the sounds of &ldquo;XII&rdquo;, the celebration of new works by some of today&rsquo;s most innovative and creative musicians. The multi-artist project took off in January 2019. It has grown since with the release of a new eSingle every month.
This LP is released today, 11 December 2020.

Project XII – Elena Kats-Chernin – Lillian’s Aria

Elena Kats-Chernin continues our Project XII for the last time this year with Lillian's Aria. The Australian composer based in Sydney has written works in nearly every genre, including&nbsp;music for dance, opera and silent film as well as documentaries. Her music was featured at the opening ceremonies of both the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and the 2003 Rugby World Cup, and recent albums of her compositions have enjoyed impressive reviews and popular success.
&ldquo;Lillian&rsquo;s Aria was commissioned by Dr Mal Eutick in memory of his mother Lillian who was a florist. While writing this piece I was inspired by the image of this strong woman tending to her beautiful flowers.&rdquo;

Project XII // Brambles - Mists Inhabit This Place – XII Vinyl 2020

This week, Brambles, a solo project of Melbourne-based musician, producer and composer Mira Dawson, continues the Project XII series with the track Mists Inhabit This Place.
&nbsp;&ldquo;For this piece I was inspired by walking home late at night from my studio, watching shadows bounce off windows and street lights. I wanted to create a piece of music that encapsulated that glimmery atmosphere. The track title is taken from a beautifully sad poem by Sylvia Plath.&rdquo; - Brambles
Additionally, we announce the release of this year&rsquo;s vinyl of all 12 pieces in the 2020 &ldquo;XII&rdquo; series. Project XII / Christina Vantzou – Siren III

Project XII continues this month with &ldquo;Siren III&rdquo; by Brussel-based composer Christina Vantzou, <a href="https://dg.lnk.to/Project12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released today</a>, coinciding with Vantzou&rsquo;s birthday.
Christina Vantzou wrote: &ldquo;An intuitive feeling&nbsp;of&nbsp;working&nbsp;with an opera singer to create the sound of a siren grew inside my thoughts throughout 2019. I also found poetry in the double meaning of the word. Working from my home studio in Brussels in the late hours, I often hear distant sirens and I noticed myself tuning into these sounds rather than tuning them out. I started to enjoy their contribution to whatever I was listening to at home and began to hear them as pieces in and of themselves, bringing together thoughts of mythology, war, and sine waves.&rdquo;
Sirens III is written for synthesizers and soprano voice and was recorded in Brussels, Belgium. The voice was performed by Lieselot De Wilde inside the echo room of Jet Studio. The synthesizers were performed, recorded, and mixed by John Also Bennett in my home studio during the first days of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
Christina Vantzou was born in Kansas City, Missouri, has Greek origins and lives in Brussels, Belgium.&nbsp; A composer &amp; experimental filmmaker, she works with space, sound, and image on a level of curiosity and refinement.
Her music deals with time expansion, atmospheres and harmonies through electronics and acoustic instruments. Vantzou has composed and released four albums of ambient-classical music on Kranky and has developed a form of graphic musical notation influenced by abstract minimalism. Her personal and unique musical language is interpreted by a revolving cast of collaborators.

Project XII – Sergio Díaz De Rojas

For the month of March, Project XII continues with &ldquo;Mundo Flotante&rdquo; by Valencia-based pianist and composer Sergio D&iacute;az De Rojas. Mundo Flotante, which translates as &ldquo;Floating World&rdquo;, is inspired by the Japanese art genre ukiyo-e. Sergio D&iacute;az De Rojas comments: &ldquo;I composed it while observing some postcards and prints I own of Hiroshige, my favorite artist of this movement (I adore his depictions of birds and flowers as well as some of his landscapes). For me, this piece feels like an early morning walk during spring, feeling the soft warmth of the sun at that time of the day, fresh air against my face, the trees moving with the wind, and birds singing softly in the background.&rdquo;

Introducing “12”

<div>The change of seasons and also the change of life with its moods and feelings are behind the sounds of the "XII" project, with which Deutsche Grammophon presents new works by innovative and creative contemporary musicians. "XII" began in January 2019 with the digital release of "Moon Square", a hypnotic piece for solo piano by Berlin-based pianist, composer and producer Arnold Kasar. The series has since grown month by month with the release of an 12 eSingles.</div>
