David Garrett: The Biography of a Versatile Violinist

David Garrett is one of the best-known violinists of his generation. The German-American musician combines classical virtuosity with rock, pop and film music, reaching audiences far beyond the traditional classical music world. His journey has taken him from celebrated child prodigy and student at New York’s Juilliard School to an international career as a soloist, composer and arranger.

Childhood and Early Musical Training

David Garrett was born in Aachen on 4 September 1980 and received his first violin at the age of four. His exceptional talent soon became apparent, and he received intensive musical training from an early age. His teachers included Zakhar Bron and Ida Haendel.

Garrett made his orchestral debut with the Hamburg Philharmonic on 28 August 1991. While still a teenager, he worked with renowned figures including Zubin Mehta, Claudio Abbado and Yehudi Menuhin. At the age of 13, he became the youngest artist ever to sign a contract with Deutsche Grammophon at that time. His first recordings and concert appearances quickly established his reputation as an outstanding young talent.

From Child Prodigy to Classical Violinist

From an early age, Garrett devoted himself to some of the most demanding works in the violin repertoire. At 15, he recorded all 24 of Niccolò Paganini’s Caprices. These technically formidable pieces remain a defining challenge for any violinist.

In the years that followed, he immersed himself in the works of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. Together with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Claudio Abbado, he recorded several works, including Mozart’s violin concertos.

Despite his early success, Garrett did not want to be confined permanently to the role of child prodigy. He began searching for a distinctive musical language that would take him beyond the conventional career of a classical soloist.

Studying at the Juilliard School in New York

This search led him to New York’s renowned Juilliard School, where he studied with Itzhak Perlman. There, he not only refined his classical technique but also became increasingly interested in composition and arranging.

The city’s musical diversity opened up new perspectives for him. Rock, pop and contemporary music became important sources of inspiration. Garrett began not merely to transcribe well-known pieces for the violin, but to reinterpret them from his own musical perspective. Throughout this development, his classical training remained the foundation of his playing.

David Garrett’s Career Between Classical Music and Crossover

David Garrett achieved his international breakthrough with a broad audience in 2007 with the album “Free”, which was also released under the title “Virtuoso”. On the album, he combined classical melodies with elements of rock and pop, developing a style that soon became his signature.

He continued along this path with albums and tours including “Rock Symphonies”, “Music”, “Explosive”, “Unlimited” and “Alive – My Soundtrack”. His programmes featured works by Mozart, Beethoven and Paganini alongside songs by Queen, Metallica and Michael Jackson.

At the same time, Garrett remained a presence on the world’s classical concert stages. He worked with ensembles including the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Filarmonica della Scala. It is precisely this combination of a classical career and crossover success that has shaped his distinctive position in the music world.

Paganini, Original Compositions and New Roles

In 2013, Garrett portrayed Niccolò Paganini in the film “The Devil’s Violinist”. The legendary virtuoso had already played an important role in Garrett’s early musical development. The album “Garrett vs. Paganini” was released in the same year.

“Explosive” followed in 2015, bringing Garrett’s own compositions more prominently into focus. He also became increasingly involved in shaping his albums and concert programmes as an arranger. In 2023, he and John Haywood released the concerto for piano and orchestra “One World”. A year later, Garrett performed the work at the Interlaken Classics Festival, making his conducting debut in the process.

“Iconic” and the Tradition of the Great Violinists

With “Iconic”, released by Deutsche Grammophon in 2022, David Garrett once again turned his attention to the classical tradition. The recording brings together character pieces and encores associated with great 20th-century violinists such as Jascha Heifetz, Fritz Kreisler and Arthur Grumiaux. “Iconic” reached number four on the German album chart and received the 2023 OPUS KLASSIK award for “Bestseller of the Year”.

In 2024, Garrett released “Millennium Symphony”, on which he combined well-known music from recent decades with his virtuosic violin playing and contemporary arrangements.

“Immortal”: The New Album Available to Pre-Order

With “Immortal”, David Garrett continues his collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon in 2026. The album explores the timeless power of classical music, bringing together works by Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Debussy, Paganini, Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich with music by John Williams and Garrett’s own composition “Deux Guitares”. All of the arrangements were created by Garrett himself. In this way, “Immortal” unites his classical training with his experience as a crossover artist, composer and arranger.

The album will be released on 9 October 2026 and is already available to pre-order.
