GUSTAVO DUDAMEL, THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC, AND DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON JOIN FORCES FOR NEW COLLABORATION
· New partnership between LA Phil and DG to build on long and productive association between orchestra, conductor, and label

Berlin, Germany / Los Angeles, CA (February 19, 2019) – The prestigious Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, and Deutsche Grammophon, the world’s leading classical music label, are set to extend their long history of making music together. They will now build on a relationship that has already produced benchmark recordings of works by Mahler and John Adams, among others, and seen orchestra and conductor play key roles in the visionary “DG Concerts” initiative, which allowed music-lovers rapid virtual access to live LA Phil concerts.
Upcoming releases on Deutsche Grammophon will include a tribute to multi-award-winning film composer John Williams and, as the LA Phil marks its centenary season, a commemorative limited-edition box set entitled LA PHIL – 100 YEARS, which will encompass many of the most significant performances given by the orchestra over the decades. As a prelude to this renewed cooperation, in November 2018 DG released the LA Phil and Dudamel’s new reading of the complete score of Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker to widespread acclaim, with Gramophone hailing the orchestra’s “fabulous” playing and The New York Times calling the album a “joyously vibrant recording”.

The centenary is a great occasion to showcase both the ensemble’s great artistic vision and its innovative approach to programming and outreach. We share the ambition to make Gustavo and the LA Phil’s latest productions heard by the widest global audience, thereby adding to the orchestra’s already rich recorded legacy with Deutsche Grammophon.”
“What an honor to collaborate with my friend and mentor John Williams,” said Dudamel. “His compositions are iconic, his talent is legendary, and his artistic generosity is heartwarming.”
Reviewing the January 24 event, the Los Angeles Times not only called the playing “spectacular,” but emphasized Dudamel’s ability to bring out a unique “sonic grandeur” in these well-known works, and to convey Williams’ “magical sense of writing music that sends a message – a message of hope and glory and wonder and joy.” All in all, what he and the LA Phil produced on the night was, according to the same review, “unlike any Williams music … heard before.”
A week later, on March 22, Deutsche Grammophon will issue LA PHIL – 100 YEARS, a spectacular limited-edition box set containing 32 CDs and three DVDs. The chosen recordings mirror the orchestra’s long history, with the earliest dating back to the 1920s. As well as comprising celebrated performances by the last eight of the orchestra’s music directors, LA PHIL – 100 YEARS will include several previously unreleased historic live recordings, among them a rendition of Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto by Arthur Rubinstein, one of Igor Stravinsky’s final conducting appearances, and Strauss’ Don Juan with Otto Klemperer at the helm. Several of these recordings are world premiere releases, while others are new to CD. All of them will also be made available digitally, concurrent to the physical release.
Later releases will include Dudamel conducting the LA Phil in Schumann’s Symphonies Nos.1-4, recorded in May 2018, and Andrew Norman’s Sustain, which premiered to rave reviews by the LA Phil this season. The new recordings feature audiophile sonics by Grammy Award ®-winning producer and engineer Dmitriy Lipay.

As we celebrate our centennial, our past and present could not be told without the unique recordings contained in the LA PHIL – 100 YEARS box set and Gustavo Dudamel’s heartfelt tribute to John Williams.”
The LA Phil’s ongoing centennial commemorations include a forward-looking roster of globe-spanning artistic programs, education and social-impact initiatives, and public celebrations, in addition to its physical and digital release plans. On February 24, the orchestra will perform live at the Academy Awards, and in March it travels to Asia for concerts in Seoul and Tokyo, including two events dedicated to the music of John Williams, featuring the repertoire recorded for the forthcoming album.
2019 marks Gustavo Dudamel’s 10th anniversary as Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Having first worked with Deutsche Grammophon in 2005, he has since led the orchestra in a series of highly acclaimed Yellow Label recordings of music by composers including Brahms – a Grammy Award-winning account of the Fourth Symphony – Bartók, Bernstein, and John Adams, whose Passion oratorio, The Gospel According to the Other Mary, was commissioned and premiered by the LA Phil. Dudamel’s career has its roots in the famous Venezuelan musical education program, El Sistema, and he has been Music Director of Venezuela’s Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra since 1999. His rich DG catalogue also reveals his deep bond with these players, and features compelling readings of works by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Mahler, among others.

Yellow Label’s acclaimed Under Stalin’s Shadow Shostakovich series continues to garner GRAMMY accolades, scoring third “Best Orchestral Performance” award and adding to growing tally with award for “Best Engineered Album, Classical”
One of today’s most compelling classical music recording projects was doubly honoured on Sunday 10 February 2019 at the 61st Grammy Awards. The Boston Symphony Orchestra and their Music Director, Andris Nelsons, took the coveted Grammy Award for “Best Orchestral Performance” for their double-disc Deutsche Grammophon set of Shostakovich’s Symphonies Nos. 4 & 11. The release, recorded live at Boston Symphony Hall as part of their critically acclaimed Under Stalin’s Shadow series, also received the award for “Best Engineered Album, Classical” in recognition of its superlative sound quality.
“It is a huge honour for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, myself and the whole team behind this project with Deutsche Grammophon to win two Grammys for the latest instalment in our Shostakovich cycle,” observed Maestro Nelsons. “This is the third time the cycle has won the ‘Best Orchestral Performance’ award.”
Nelsons and the Orchestra are no strangers to success at the Grammys. They won the 2016 Best Orchestral Performance Award with the first release in Under Stalin’s Shadow, featuring performances of Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony and music from his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, and repeated the achievement the following year with their album of the Fifth, Eighth and Ninth Symphonies, and the Suite from Hamlet.
Since the Grammys began in 1959, only one other cycle devoted to the symphonies of a single composer has received awards on multiple occasions.

The next instalment in the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Shostakovich cycle with Andris Nelsons, set for international release on 22 February 2019, couples the composer’s Symphonies Nos.6 & 7 in company with his incidental music to King Lear and Festive Overture.

Hamburg, 1st February 2019 – Young maestro Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla makes history as she signs to Deutsche Grammophon – home to legendary conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, Claudio Abbado, Karl Böhm, Pierre Boulez and Carlos Kleiber. The Lithuanian musician, who is Music Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, becomes the first female conductor to sign an exclusive long-term contract with the label.
Gražinytė-Tyla will release her debut album in May – a collection of orchestral works by Polish composer Mieczysław Weinberg, whose centenary falls this year. She conducts the combined forces of the CBSO, Kremerata Baltica and violinist Gidon Kremer in Symphony No. 21 “Kaddish” – a major work completed in 1991 and dedicated to the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto. She also directs Kremerata Baltica in the early Symphony No. 2.
Gražinytė-Tyla will go on to present music by her compatriot Raminta Šerkšnytė with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Vilnius Municipal Choir and Kremerata Baltica, a project she will follow up with an album of works by British composers with the CBSO as the orchestra celebrates its centenary.
“Deutsche Grammophon was part of my musical upbringing,” says Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. “It’s a genuine honour to join DG and to record works that will be new to so many listeners. The music of Mieczysław Weinberg and Raminta Šerkšnytė, a rising star among Lithuanian composers, deserves to reach the widest possible audience. It’s very exciting that our partnership will document some of the musical adventures that the fabulous CBSO and I are about to embark on together and will celebrate the orchestra’s centenary with an album of landmarks of 20th-century British music. I look forward to this thrilling collaboration with DG and to the musical discoveries we can make together.”

Born in Vilnius, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla is one of today’s most exciting young conductors. After early studies in choral conducting and the visual arts in her home city at the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Art, she went on to study at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, before completing her conducting studies in Bologna, Leipzig and Zurich. Her career breakthrough came in 2012 when she won the prestigious Salzburg Young Conductors Award. In 2013 she was appointed First Kapellmeister at Bern City Theatre, and from 2015 to 2017 was Music Director of the Salzburg Landestheater.
In February 2016 she hit the headlines around the world after she was unanimously chosen to be the new Music Director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra – taking over the post formerly held by Sir Simon Rattle, Sakari Oramo and Andris Nelsons, just months after making her debut with the orchestra in July 2015. Their partnership has since flourished, with Gražinytė-Tyla praised for her charismatic artistry and innovative repertoire choices.
A Gustavo Dudamel Fellow of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the 2012-13 season, Gražinytė-Tyla has served as the orchestra’s Assistant Conductor for two seasons and, for the 2016-17 season, as its Associate Conductor.
Gražinytė-Tyla’s signing to Deutsche Grammophon marks an important
milestone in her career. Her first recording was made at Symphony Hall
Birmingham during the CBSO’s critically-acclaimed Weinberg Weekend
in November 2018, and the album was made with the generous support of the
Adam Mickiewicz Institute. It will be released in May and promises to be an
exciting debut from an artist who never ceases to inspire.
Mari Samuelsen debuts on Deutsche Grammophon
Berlin, January 2019. Deutsche Grammophon is delighted to announce the signing of an exclusive agreement with Norwegian violinist Mari Samuelsen. Her first single, Max Richter’s “November”, is set for international release on 11 January 2019 to coincide with the ARTE broadcast of her spectacular performance last October at Beijing’s Forbidden City as part of the DG 120 celebrations (scheduled for 13 January at 5.40pm CET).

Mari Samuelsen’s debut DG album was recorded with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin and conductor Jonathan Stockhammer. Tracks range from Bach’s Chaconne in D minor to orchestral pieces by leading contemporary composers, including Max Richter, Brian Eno, Jóhann Jóhannsson and Peter Gregson. The album will be released on the Yellow Label in early summer 2019.
Mari Samuelsen is one of today’s most imaginative and eloquent violinists, known for her inventive approach to programming and presentation. Her style of playing blends virtuosity with entrancing musical finesse. She has appeared as soloist on many of the world’s leading stages, including New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, London’s Barbican Centre, Berlin’s Konzerthaus and the Paris Philharmonie and Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.
“I’m super happy to be joining the DG family!” says Samuelsen. “Continuing my musical journey as violinist with the absolute best team of creative people, composers, electronic artists and producers, and releasing recordings on the most legendary classical label in the world is truly exciting. I’ve always felt an urge not to do what’s traditionally expected. My aim is to create new and innovative programmes for music lovers – regardless of genre. I cannot wait to share my selection of pieces on my upcoming album.”
Christian Badzura, Director New Repertoire, Deutsche Grammophon, adds, “I heard Mari’s interpretation of the Bach Chaconne a few years ago and was blown away by her clarity of articulation and the wonderful sound colours she produces. We could have made a complete album of Bach’s timeless music, but were keen to reflect the great breadth of her artistic vision. Her debut album combines familiar repertoire with freshly composed pieces to create an irresistible musical mix.”
Max Richter’s music has become an essential part of Mari’s personal playlists as well as her live repertoire. Instantly struck by his 2012 DG release Recomposed, she has since played the Vivaldi-inspired score with Max in concert, most recently in December 2018 in Hong Kong. They have also performed Memoryhouse and worked together on his latest album for the Yellow Label, Three Worlds – Music from Woolf Works. “Apart from being a wonderful violinist,” comments Richter, “Mari has an instinctive understanding of my compositional world and an uncanny ability to communicate my intentions.”
Mari opened the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2017 and brought DG’s classical club night experience to Oslo as artistic director of Norway’s Yellow Lounge. She has also collaborated with legendary electronic artists Jeff Mills and Dubfire, and created pioneering projects with Berlin multimedia artist Philipp Geist. Nordic Noir, her first solo album, recorded with the Trondheim Soloists and released on DECCA in 2017, was built around the kind of brooding, unsettling music heard in TV series such as The Killing, The Bridge and Broadchurch.
In the first half of 2019, Mari will – among other appearances – be performing works by Richter (in Tokyo in March, and in Lyon in May) and music by Arvo Pärt and Pēteris Vasks on tour with the Baltic Sea Philharmonic and Kristjan Järvi, with concerts at the Berlin Philharmonie and Hamburg Elbphilharmonie (June/July).

Deutsche Grammophon is marking the 120th anniversary of its company foundation on 6 December 1898 with a carefully curated global programme of DG120 live concerts, special events, record releases and much more. The world’s oldest and best-known classical label will use its anniversary year to continue building a lasting legacy. The company’s unprecedented DG120 programme has been designed to reach existing fans worldwide, attract new followers in Asia and beyond, and share its peerless catalogue with as many people as possible. It has already attracted new audiences in search of great recordings and performances, as well as garnering extensive international media coverage.
The birthday celebrations began with the spectacular DG 120 – The Tokyo Concert, held at Tokyo’s legendary Suntory Hall last night, 5 December, in the presence of the Japanese imperial family. Anne-Sophie Mutter joined Seiji Ozawa, Diego Matheuz and the Saito Kinen Orchestra for a programme of works by Bach, Beethoven, Saint-Saëns and Tchaikovsky.
In Korea, Seong-Jin Cho marks Deutsche Grammophon’s actual birthday in style today with DG120 – The Seoul Anniversary Concert, performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto in D minor K.466 with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and Lionel Bringuier at the Seoul Arts Center. Anne-Sophie Mutter joins the Seoul party tomorrow, Friday 7 December, opening the evening’s programme with Bruch’s evergreen First Violin Concerto.
The celebrations continue well into 2019. Future anniversary landmarks include DG120 – The Hamburg Concert, with Hélčne Grimaud, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Andris Nelsons (19 January 2019), DG120 – The Hanover Concert, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Nelsons (9 April), and DG120 – The London Concert at the Royal Albert Hall with DG artists Peter Gregson and Víkingur Ólafsson (1 May).
The Yellow Label launched its milestone year in October with a DG120 Gala Concert at Beijing’s Forbidden City, the first classical performance to be staged there for 20 years. In November, the next anniversary event was hosted by Deutsche Grammophon in Berlin – the city in which it is now headquartered. DG120 – The Berlin Gala was held at the Berlin Philharmonie and featured Lang Lang and Anne-Sophie Mutter, who performed the world premiere of a new version of John Williams’ Across the Stars, dedicated to her.
Deutsche Grammophon has reached out to young audiences across East Asia by introducing its pioneering Yellow Lounge classical club night format to the region, with debut events in Tokyo, Beijing, Seoul and Shanghai, featuring DG artists Avi Avital, Peter Gregson, Daniel Hope, Mischa Maisky, Alice Sara Ott, Andreas Ottensamer, Yuja Wang and Esther Yoo. Future DG120 Yellow Lounge nights, presented in partnership with Volkswagen Group, are set to take place in major Asian cities.
The objective of sharing the beauty and emotional power of classical music with a broad global audience has been achieved by leveraging the reach of the events through TV and digital media. The Forbidden City Concert and Berlin Gala will air in over 50 countries with a projected reach of over 30 million viewers. The seven DG120 event live-streams so far have reached a total online audience of over 1.8 million viewers.
