The Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra was a relative newcomer itself, but at its best it could rival the more established Philharmonic. That is certainly the case with Maazel's famous recording of the Franck, a performance marked by the young conductor's zeal for following the detail of the score -- every dynamic is scrupulously observed, yet there is no sense of dogged literalness in the sweep he brings to the composer's surging themes. And he and his sound engineers balance the orchestation in a way that brings both fullness and transparency. There is also a period charm in the sound that German instrumentalists -- particularly the woodwind -- made in those days, a distinctiveness largely lost in these days of musical globlisation.
