Deutsche Grammophon’s Yellow Lounge concept was launched over a decade ago in Berlin’s trendiest techno clubs with the aim of taking classical music to new audiences. On Monday night, the tables were turned as, in an unexpected move, a special-edition Yellow Lounge event was produced in a conventional concert hall.

Yellow Lounge nights have been attracting an ever-growing following of younger music-lovers for years now – not just in Berlin, but all over the world. Staged by cutting-edge visual artists, wherever the events take place they feature guest DJs spinning classical tracks alongside live performances by stars of the classical world, appearing in exclusive new formations.

On Monday night, Yellow Lounge joined forces with the Konzerthaus Berlin for an exciting experiment that brought the club scene to the concert hall. As part of this week’s Festival Mythos Berlin, a group of high-profile artists performed at the prestigious venue – dramatically (and temporarily!) transformed for the occasion.

Violinist Nemanja Radulović, tenor Piotr Beczała and clarinettist Andreas Ottensamer were joined live on stage in the main hall of the Konzerthaus by composer/multi-instrumentalist/producer Ólafur Arnalds and pianist Alice Sara Ott. Playing “in the round”, they performed selections from their latest albums – Journey East, The French Collection, Brahms The Hungarian Connection and The Chopin Project – taking an enthralled audience on a fabulous musical journey. With guest appearances by turntablist supreme DJ Marc Hype (Dusty Donuts) and members of the Konzerthausorchester, and bookending sets from DJs Clé and Eva Be (Sonar Kollektiv), this Yellow Lounge event was truly a night to remember.
