25,000 flock to Bebelplatz for Yuja Wang and Daniel Barenboim

© Stephanie Lehmann An annual highlight of summer in Berlin is “Staatsoper für Alle”: free outdoor performances on the grand neoclassical square bounded by the opera house, St. Hedwig’s Cathedral and Humboldt University. On Sunday, the Berlin Staatskapelle and its “music director for life” Daniel Barenboim were joined there by Yuja Wang for a thrilling afternoon of Beethoven.

Two musical sensations, separated by generations but united in the blazing intensity of their music-making. In the “Emperor” Concerto they roused the raptly concentrated capacity audience to tumultuous acclaim. The critics were also delighted: Der Tagesspiegel proclaimed the performance a “triumph with piano”, while the Berliner Zeitung dubbed Yuja “a superb pianist”.

Barenboim and the Staatskapelle also delivered a “masterly” performance of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony in this “hugely successful concert” (Berliner Zeitung).
